Just a quick tip on the refill / top up. alway do the last fill with the engine running and in N. you'll get an extra litre in that way.

    Cheers

Mine did this once, I left it and it hasn't done it since. I actually forgot it happened until I read this.

Got mine rebuilt at Ron Hill Automatics on the Sunshine Coast. It had done about 182,000klms before it started doing weird things like, not wanting to move! I did an oil and filter change (kit) and checked the dregs for particulates and there were some rather long slivers of metal amongst a little sludge and a whole lot of sparkly stuff in the oil (metal) - not good. Anyway I took it to Ron Hill and there is an English guy there that has worked on these boxes before. One full rebuild later and it is better than ever.

Hope it does not come to a full rebuild for you, $$$$$$ are involved.

    Cheers

Hi Mikey - I think I'm in the same boat. What sort of dollars did you pay?

    Thanks

DiscoCam, I did not get any change out of 6K. A "standard" rebuild was going to cost me about $4200 for the amount of work that needed doing to my auto box, so I asked was there anything that could be done to make the auto better/more robust/durable for towing etc. apart from regular maintenance and oil changes! The answer was yes in the way of better than standard parts, the fitting in of more clutch packs (not sure of the correct terminology or how they achieve this) etc. In the end it drove way better than before. Warranty is two years 40,000k's as long as it is serviced by them at 20,000k's which I am more than happy to do.

I received good service and advice. Also the price above was a drive in drive out deal and included a FULL flush of the transmission oil circuit including the front cooler. No point putting back a fully rebuilt as good as new box and filling it full of contaminated oil!

The decision for us to do the rebuild was a turning point in us enhancing the D2's all round ability and reliability. Before the gearbox issue I was thinking of selling but I do not think we would have gotten much for it with a broken auto trans, so we just bit the bullet and dived in.

After all, it's only money right? The fact that it was money that we could have spent elsewhere to greater advantage, ie mortgage, somehow seems irrelevant when we take it on a trip with the camper in tow.

    Hope this info helps.

    Cheers

Thanks Mikey. 6k...holy crap!! Get your point though about just getting it done though as that is what is making me face up to the prospect of having mine done. Not much use having the car if I don't have the confidence to drive the thing to somewhere it might be difficult to get a tow home.

Maybe annual bonus + tax return = new auto this year.

    The final verdict

Hi, I started this thread when the auto was skipping 2nd gear and then wouldn't go into reverse and thought I'd let you know what the result of the auto problem was. After exploring a few dead ends with filter changes, solenoids and electronic issues, the box has been out and fully reconditioned. The place it was done at I believe is the same one mentioned below with a 2 year 40K warranty. I'm in Brisbane. I still can't get over how it was fine one day and then gone the next but any way it is fine now. Cost installed was $4400.00.
