Not sure, I think its legal on the roof, but I haven't checked the regulations for myself. I carry diesel in long range tanks as a preference and if I need more I carry it in jerry cans behind the cargo barrier. I do carry petrol for the mowers back to the house in the car, but I doubt that I'd ever do that for touring. I just disagree with the fumes, dangers etc inside the car, especially if it leaks.

I agree, long range tank is the best option. Otherwise I think I would carry in the boot behind barrier as well, possibly mounting jerry holders to the top of the drawers.
I have read that plastic jerry cans are better as they dont expand as much with temp changes. If the container is sealed properly there should not be any fumes.
