    Roofracks

Hi , have a d2 with roof rails , looking at racks and cage to carry a few jerry cans on a upcoming trip , any recommendations as to type brand etc , is it better to get something to attach to the front rails or get the rear type that attaches to the gutters
    Regards

I have both. I got a steel roof rack for $750 from Powerful 4X4. In hindsight, I probably should have spent a bit more and got and aluminium one. I reckon mine is 50-60kgs.

    Hope this helps.

The roof rails are limited to 50kg on road 35ish off road - see the Handbook. Gutter mount will be limited to the rating on the rack and how much you really want to have up top for stability.

I've got Rhino bars that I put a bag on and try only to put the bulky light stuff up there. On remote trips I've had two sets of bars and carry the second spare wheel on the front set.

    Howdy,
I note the Powerful 4x4 rack in the 4WD Action mag each month. Apart from being heavy, are you happy with it? Well made, powder coat even and good quality? Thanks for your thoughts.

Carrying anything on the roof is a last resort. Are all 5 seats full and the cargo barrier used to the roof?

    If you must--
attach the cans "permanently" and use a long siphon hose.

Yeah it suits my needs, but it only gets used occasionally now. (we now have a camper trailer with a rack on top.)

I'm a big believer in you get what you pay for and this is certainly a case for that argument. I have seen better, thicker powder coating, but not at the price. I got it for light bulky stuff.

If it was copping a battering, it probably wouldn't be wearing as well. If you're only using it for tents and swags, it'll be fine. I think you would need to stow jerry cans and spare wheels a bit more carefully.

In terms of service, they were excellent to deal with. Prompt and friendly.

Must better than premium unleaded in the cabin though, what about a mounting bracket for the spare wheel , is there anything like that available ?

Fuel should ALWAYS be carried "outside" the vehicle "imo".

I run the ARB Defender 3/4 rack with Discovery2 legs. It is a heavy rack but its a good one.

    Cheers

Can you legally carry fuel on the outside of a vehicle?

I recall it being illegal to carry it on the rear with a tyre carrier etc. so the roof would be the only other option apart from inside the vehicle.

Long range tank for extra fuel, although expensive probably safer and deffinetely legal.
