Confirmed as a completely stuffed universal. Front side of the transfer case. (is that what it's called?)

I reckon it gave up when i hit the sand a month or so back. From memory that's around the time i noticed the squeek start, and then the shudder came.

Waiting to get confirmation for warranty etc. It SAYS that it should be covered.. but I'm not holding my breath.. wish me luck! :-)

PS.. anyone got anything to say about Pro-Anix at Marooka? They're the nearest authorised repairer to me through AWN waranty. PM me if it's anything that breaches forum rules

PPS.. Thanks JustinC for putting the fear into me. It's not moving till it has to go get a new uni! :-)

    :/

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life but i think I might have this on my '93 110. When driving I get a bit of a squeak that sounds like its coming from underneath the car. I just had the gearbox rebuilt so im afraid to drive it after reading this. Can I check the uni's myself then take it to a mechanic?

    Thanks guys

Its not a normal LandRover problem,,
    seems to only affect D2's
    having said that--

all drive shafts with uni's need maintaining,,
a visual check is your first job.
look for shiney bits, then give the shaft a good shake.

Exact thing happened to me last week although the vibration was there for a long time before it became a real body massage. I quickly checked the universal joints (UJ'S) an they looked and felt ok. After speaking with Kyle (Alien D2) I went and had a closer look at the front drive shaft....in particular the double cardigan joint and sure enough I could see slight damage to one of the UJ's there. Spent the next day sourcing the parts and rebuilding. Not a particularly hard job, but a vice and a hammer are your best friend....if you dont have a proper UJ removal tool.

Check urban panzers site for info on how to do it. Its what I followed

I found the heavy duty greasable hardy spicer UJ at CBC bearings for $20 each. Considering I thought my transfer case was blown....it was very cheap alternative.

the part numbers on Urban Panzas site are a little old for the Hardie SPicer UJ

they now are K5-L4R (1300 series)

Get yourself a good set of circlip pliers if your old UJ's have the old circlips. These new UJ's use pointy nose pliers to instal and remove the circlip

    After doing mine.....no more vibrations!!!!!

    happy rebuilding.

PM me if you have any questions

    Chris

    noisy joint

Why is it that the uni joint in front shaft decides to become noisy and have lots of free play in a very short period of time ???
Yes, have read of the dripping aircon above the joint. Have seen it dripping. No, did nothing about it. Have greased the other joints, yes they have grease nipples, but, can't understand why no grease nipples on the double joint. Probably to ensure that I am up for a few dollars this week. Bother, damn, blast.

$60 plus grease, plus shed time.....not a huge outlay. Unless of course you get someone else to do it?
