    D2 Shudder/squeak diagnosis help

    Morning all,

Hoping to get some help in pre-diagnosis of a new problem in my D2 (2001, 7 seat, SLS, TD5, Auto - pretty much factory).

recently I've notice a substantial squeak (chirping, much like drilling mild steel with a blunt drill bit) coming from under the body at aroun 1800 - 2200 RPM. It only happens when just past the "null zone" of acceleration. eg very light acceleration - so not much load on the tranny etc. Put the boot in and it stops. Take the foot off and it stops - it's just there when your pushing it lightly.

To accompany this there is a fairly strong shudder at low speed when engine braking. Eg going down a mild slope at around 20-30Km, let foot off and you get a good shudder.

It seems to disappear when thrown into N - so in my mind it's drive train related (as opposed to wheels). Bearings? Universals? Shafts? (eek)

I'm probably not able to get the Disco to a workshop for major work for a while (fund$) so I just want to figure out what exactly this is.. and more importantly how bad it is to keep driving on it.

As always.. thanks in advance for your thoughts and input!

    Cheers

    Wil

    Not sure if they're related.
First one definetely sounds like front drive shaft is about to go. Check the uni's for movement and play in the shaft.
There's heaps of threads here and in "the Good Oil" about it.
Brake shudder is possibly caused by rotors that need replacing or pads, possibly both.

I wouldn't let either of these things go too long before checking them.
They have the potential to get ugly.

I actually meant ENGINE braking - eg, just backing off the accelerator and letting the car slow up via engine compression. (i'm not real good at proper terms and lingo when it comes to cars, so forgive me if I sound like a noob!)

The brake pads.. they're next! (oh my aching wallet)

    Brake Pads

    Will

Brake pads are easy to do. About $160 -180 for all four wheels in parts.

If you want a hand changing the brake pads I can help out. Send a PM.

After the first time you can do it yourself no worries.

    Regards
    Andrew

IMMEDIATELY STOP DRIVING UNTIL YOU HAVE INSPECTED THE FRONT TAILSHAFT FOR A FAILURE OF 1 OR MORE UNIVERSAL JOINTS!!!!!!!

When these let go, and they DO, they will destroy the side of the transmission.

    Go outside, do it NOW!!!

Um.. what he said...(I can hear JC yelling across the Straight from here).
Mine had the same noise as yours with the slight vibration just noticeable.
2 worn uni's in the joint, caught it just in time

    D2 shudder/squeak

Very ominous! sounds suspiciusly like front unis failing.
If they let go,kiss goodbye to your transmission if you are at any sort of speed.

On the off chance that the unis be OK, your flex plate in front of the auto transmission may be on it's way out, especially if the noise disappears when you go to N. I have seen these flexplates with cracks in them but still functioning normally.
