    Unhappy TD5 won't start

Don't know history. Bought as is. Starter turns motor over but won't ignite it. Black puffs of smoke come out of exhaust when attempting start - tried ether didn't work at all either. Fuel filter warning light bulb check doesn't light when starter switch is turned to position 'II' ever.
Photos show under bonnet box relays R8 and R14 are not present - appears R8 is for ACE 'if fitted' but R14 shows a book. ANYONE KNOW WHAT R!4 is for and/or if necessary?

Also the under steering column lower relay - which from cover looks like the 'check engine' symbol with cross through it - is absent. anyone know whether it is the same as the adjacent 'door' symbol relay - which I tried putting there but it didn't help with car start anyway - and/or if important?

By now you're probably all thinking I deserve my problems - have pity. cheers.

I have no ready answers for you, just more questions...
Did it run when you bought it? If so, missing fuses are not likely to be the issue.
Was it private buy or dealer? If a dealer you may have some redress in terms of fault finding at least, if private, then ask the seller what maybe required,as it is probably not the first time...
Fuel filter warning light bulb failure is probably just the globe in dash gone, but you could do worse than change the filter anyway.
Are you with the NRMA? they maybe able to do a roadside diagnosis. Worst case, see if the local dealer can run a "test book" diagnosis for you.

I bought at auction 'as is' so there is no recourse or answer there. Thanks.

On the TD5 Disco's there is a reset button.
In the engine bay on the left side of the fire wall(Passenger side) there is a switch.
Rubber top with the loom coming in the bottom.
To reset press the swith from the top.
It wouldn't be the first to need this, something to do with elecrical cut out in certain situations.

See how you go and let us know.

    Oh...welcome to the forum

    Welcome to the Forum.

When you turn the key on to the start position you should be able to hear the fuel pump whine, its electric and you cant miss its noise, its in the fuel tank so even if you leave the ignition on and walk to the back.

The fuel inertia switch, which has already been mentioned is another..

Is there fuel coming from the bottom of the fuel filter, its located at the drivers rear wheel arch, just make sure you have fuel in the filter, there should be a plastic drain cap on the filter which if you unscrew should let fuel drain out.

Had pushed the reset button before - it didn't appear to need it. Have loosened the water sensor switch under the fuel filter and visually clean diesel trickled out ... thanls. The diesel pump does come on when the key is turned and switches off in a few seconds as one might expect when the pressure builds up.

2 other things I thought off.
Low battery voltage..under 11volts while cranking and the ECU shuts off so no fuel flow.
Or if you have an owners book try the bleeding sequence..last resort IMO.

The pump shouldn't switch off its an electric pump and should run all the time, it may queiten down, but should still be able to hear it..

You can hit the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet, that sometimes works altho I have never tried it myself..

The only other thing I can think of is maybe your Crank Angle Senser, but I dont know how to check that..

I would be looking closely at the fuel pump myself..

Time for the bushmans compression test.

Turn the engine over by hand and feel for any basic difference in resistance over 720 degrees. you should get 5 evenly spaced equally resistive "spots"

then its time for a bushmans cooling system pressure test

Remove the expansion tank cap and fill the tank to nearly the brim with water. pierce a rubber stopper with a ball inflator then jamb that stopper into the neck of the expansion tank. Attach a bike pump and start pumping, wet the top of the stopper to make sure the air isnt coming out there. Does the level of the water drop as you keep pumping? (remember max pressure for the tank is about 18psi)

IF the pulses dont feel the same and the water level drops the head is stuffed.
