If you are bored and had a few vodkas, then you might do this with an old airbag:

More on topic - I have also heard that it was pushed back to 15 years....
I understand from a manufacturer pov, the design life of a vehicle is commonly ten years. Yeah, I know, there are vehicles running around out there from when the car was first manufactured (actually, there is a guy with a Model T at the end of my street - don't know its age). But the design principle still stands.
When airbags first came out as a mass provided item, there was a concern that the bag would not deploy properly after sitting dormant for 10 years or more, as the components may have deteriorated (bag, trigger device etc). LR is being conservative and ensuring that it is replaced due to age.
Experience in the USA, which was the first country to have a lot of cars with airbags (yes, Germany invented it - BOSCH (?), but the yanks are the ones who made it cheap by using pyros (ie the same mechanism as hand grenades, land mines etc), have had airbags successfully deploy after 15 to 20 years.
BTW, the explosive force in an airbag is about the same as a claymore land mine, so anyone with their feet on the dash (passenger side) or legs on the seat / folded in front of them will die a very painful death from internal injuries (legs into the chest and abdomen etc) if it deploys with them in this position.
Be careful around them and treat any maintenance around them with lots of respect, as they will take your head off (figuratively or in reality) if they go off with you too close to them and you are not in a normal sitting / steering position.

I cant help but feel for the poor guy how did he fall for that one. That must have knocked the stuffing out of him.![]()
New guy. His first day at work![]()
Bugger!
SLS, SRS, SMS, SOS!
A few months ago the SRS light in the dash came on ... I thought it was a faulty fuse connection so I removed and replaced the fuse ... no more light on the dash!
Is the Disco clever enough to know when 10 years is up and remind you with a red light?
Cheers guys. Just on the video - I have never been that bored or had that much vodka
I did a search on airbags on the forum and came up with a couple of hundred threads on rear suspension.
I hope it is 15 years - I might show a bit more initiative and call Land Rover directly. I'll repost here if I get some more info then. I've only had the truck two weeks and rego is due, and I got a chip in the windscreen todayso not cheap so far.
But very nice to drive....
And hence why I cringe every time I see a woman with her chest only inches from the steering wheel..
SRS bags are only safe if they can FULLY deploy in an impact before you begin to collide with the bag...
The inflating bag will (as previously mentioned) break your ribs and sternum, crush your chest (and lungs) and break your nose and jaw...
People of short stature driving the big vehicle with the seat so close NEED to look into buying a suitable vehicle where they can sit further back.
Many Euro vehicles now have adjustable foot controls for just such needs.
Update: Not from a Landy mechanic, but form the Haynes manual I received in the mail today from the UK
Very clearly states in big bold letters near the start that SRS airbags and seatbelts to be checked after 15 years. Hooray!
I'm assuming that they didn't put better airbags in the UK version than in ours.
