I take it you can lock the centre diff in your Disco.

Apart from a couple of extra clunks, you'll be fine.

I drove around on the rear diff for a week or so a few years back when I was rebuilding the front drive shaft. I noticed the vehicle felt unstable at times. Maybe yours will feel that way, maybe not but keep it in mind. Mine did not handle the same.

Sounds like you need to be thinking about that D3 you have been talking about.

Doing the same thing right now waiting for a new ring & pinion install on the front diff. Been running fine for about 12 days of gentle driving, no change except a mild backlash clunk in the rear on lifting off. Have been checking the rotorflex for cracks but all good so far. Still feel uneasy doing it & looking to go back to 4wd asap.
    Cheers

Be aware that your front diff will still be turning so depending upon what your problem is with your front diff, I'd be wary of driving with only front drive shaft removed.

Safer to remove front axles/cv's also.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that D2 axles are not fully floating, hence you can not remove them and still have the hubs on...

Well Beefy it looks like you made it back home ok. I guess that you will have a few teeth from the side and/or spider gears hopefully at the bottom of the diff. Worst case, a bit of metal will go between the Crown wheel and pinion. If this happens you will break the carrier as well, "been there, done that" on our S2A...

You will most likely get away with it... just go slowly around corners.

I assume that you are getting a complete centre to swap out?

Yep, you can pull them out, just jam rags into the housing to save the oily mess that will occur

Hmmm... I was told that you simply can't remove the axles on a D2.
We were forced to drive home with a cmaper in tow just on the front diff when the rear blew a year or so back. Lots of noises..... but they were less and less the further we went
By the time we got it to the mechanic, we had totally destroyed the rear diff.

    But we got home
