    V8 Inlet Manifold Leak?

    Firstly - hello I've not posted before although my wife has had her Disco for almost three years. I'm a Pom in Perth WA with a collection of British iron (Triumphs) and my wifes 2000my V8 Disco 2.

    I'm pretty mechanical having built several different engines from Triumph Spitfire, TR6 and Triumph Stag V8 to Jaguar V12 so have come across a lot of problems in my time.

    As mentioned the motor is a 2000 Disco 2 V8 with 230,000kms - never been apart as far as I can tell.

    I'm a bit puzzled with my V8's latest issue - I thought it was blowing a RH bank exhaust manifold as it has the characteristic noise of a blown exhaust gasket at the back of that block which gets worse with increasing throttle but replacement of both head - manifold and manifold - downpipe gaskets revealed no leak and hence no improvement. Next thought was a loose plug but all checked with no issue so I guess the inlet gasket must have a leak!!???
    Is this
    1. Common? - can't believe it is as I've not found any threads related to it
    2. Easy to remedy? Any tips, recommendations as to stripping/reassembling the D2 inlet manifold and associated plumbing.

    Likely in that case a head gasket. To remove the inlet manifold the top half needs to come off first. Just undo the bolts down the middle. There is a coil pack bracket at the back of the engine that will have to be undone from the manifold and bent slightly backwards. Then access to the bottom half is easy.

    For determining gasket blow-outs I use a strip of paper held near the suspect joint and watch it as I rev the engine.

    Thanks for that (I think!)
    I thought that the headgasket might be a more likely problem as there can't be much load on an inlet manifold - I have no oil or water loss so I assume i that must limit where the gasket has actually failed - do the D2 have the old steel shim style gaskets like a P6 (the only other RV8 I've done a set of heads on) or a composite gasket?

    Its a pressure leak related to throttle opening under load but will also hiss sometimes on shut down - like a valve leaking? If its a head gasket its no where near oil or water and no obvious power loss - spoke to Wilf Chambers in Osbourne Park and he said he had one 3.9 V8 with a pin hole in the head leaking combustion pressure to atmosphere????

    Just to update - just checked the plugs - all four look very even burning - clean white/grey - no oil or soot so if its a combustion leak its tiny??

    Compression leaks from the head gasket just vent sideways without water loss, because there isn't a water port anywhere along the sides of the heads. So it's quite common with aged engines. Just fix it before the gasket blows right out. You may need a light skim of the head face if there are marks of the fire ring moving. Consider doing both heads at the same time, and you will need a set of head bolts too.
