    Hi Pacemaker,

Did you eventually buy the Disco?

Well, i chanced upon the thread while researching the same issue with my car. The symptoms are exactly the same, comes on at about 2100-2200 rpm under acceleration or even cruising at 100km/hr, so i'm suspecting that its something harmonic.

But i am able to cancel out the vibration noise if i firmly grip the Auto transfer knob, so it seems to stem from the transmission.

    Anybody else fixed this?

    Hi ravolva,

Yes I bought the disco. Currently I've done 11,000 kms in it. I've done a lot of work to it but it still has a vibration at 2250 rpm. It's a misfire I'm pretty sure. The vibration is no where near as bad as when I bought the car but it's still annoying. I replaced the ecu and injector harness and have been cleaning the oil from the ecu plug every thousand ks. When I check it now there's virtually no oil at the ecu plug. The miss is getting slightly worse so I have cleaned the old injector harness and am going to fit it this week some time. I'll check the codes on the injectors match what s been programmer into the ecu.
Does your disco have the vibration when revving the eng in neutral?

P.s I'm really enjoying the disco. If I could eliminate the miss I would be a very satisfied owner!

    Cheers. Michael.

Mine doesn't vibrate at 2200 rpm when in P or Neutral....Well other than the slightly harsher harmonic vibration (i think) at that rpm.

Got a break-through yesterday! I somewhat suspected that the vibrations are coming through from the Auto knob or cover. I took the whole cover off (realised that 2 of the mounting legs were broken!) and drove around without it. The vibrations were 90% less!...almost unnoticeable if you're not looking out for it!

I muck around with the transmission knob cover, and realised that the sliding plastic strip (that slides along on rails) were actually flapping about. I remove the flappy plastic strip completely and re-install the cover...and no more irritating vibrations!

There's also quite a lot of left/right play in the auto stick, so for good measure, i stuff in rubber hoses along the plate where the stick slides along and grease up everything. Hope it helps to dampen the vibrations further.

So i'm beggining to think that in my case (at least) the harmonic frequency at 2200 rpm was amplified by the cover and the flappy plastic strip! Mystery solved!

Now i have to find out if replacing the whole cover with a new one will solve the whole issue!

I have come to the decision of buying an auto td5 for towing purposes. Today I test drove 1999 series 2 with 220,000 kms that had the 3 amigos on and very harsh vibration at 2200 rpm. The vibration was only at slight throttle load though. Full throttle seemed to make most of It go away and any rpm either side was very smooth. After 110 klms hr it was hardly noticeable even at low throttle load.
When the vibration was there it was quite audible as well. My missus was sitting in the passenger side and said to me during the test drive what the hell is that? Referring to the vibration and harmonic noise.
I have searched and searched for more info on this site and on the net but couldn't find any info on when or how this common problem happens ie. During light throttle at 2200 rpm versus what repairs fixed the problem.
The disco has great service history always done at a disco dealership and the vehicle is quite cheap. I'm also a mechanic so repairing the car isn't a concern to me, it just seems that some people never fix the vibration problem which concerns me a little.
Any info or ideas will be very appreciated. Thanx in advance.
    Michael.
I'd be budgeting for a new trans shortly, we put lots in at around these KM's. preferrably I'd look at a later model. The 3 amigos can also cost a fair bit to repair at worst case.

The non flash ECU's and autos in the early D2 were limited to 350Nm or the trans goes into limp mode etc etc. And YES, some harmonic vibes in these early ones just don't go away, even after engine mounts, harmonic balancer, etc etc IE lots of $$$$$$$$$$.

    Keep looking.

Unfortunately not. From 2200 to 2350 it still vibrates. It's really ****ing me off.
Does yours do it in every gear even in neutral?
    Cheers. Michael.

    Mine still vibrates. D2a (2003) Td5 Auto with 190k.

Have replaced engine mounts, front and rear prop-shafts, rebuilt the TC and will check the HB in the next couple of days. Have tried multiple ECU programs and replaced the injector harness and the crank angle sensor.

I have been contemplating buying a new Auto box and swapping it out as it really does sound like its coming from that area (bell housing). I have inspected the flex plate and can't see anything obvious.

I really really don't want to sell but it sounds like some vibes just can't be fixed (JC).

Could it be the bearing in the torque converter lock-up? There is one in there, had a good lood at everything in mine that could be an issue and be replaced when I had mine rebuilt.

so were you getting a vibration and did it disappear when you had the box rebuilt?

No, but it's a point in the area described as the point of vibration.
