Thread: LAND ROVER DISCOVERY ES V8 2001

    Hey mate,
I bought an 01' ES V8 in May last year and learned 5 years worth of stuff in two weeks from this site - its the bible!
Paid 121,000klms for $16000 with rear air option, and a very well cared for vehicle. The dud dealers managed to scrape every corner though!

    Important things I learned;

I bought from a dealer because vehicles under 150000klms and less than 10 years old have a 3 month statutory warranty - see Vic roads for inclusions. This saved me 1000's to fix the worn out ignition barrel, 'three amigos' and a water pump seal that was MAJOR labour!

Make sure your price is 'Drive away, no more to pay' cause my dodgey dealer sent me the vic roads transfers 3 months later for me to pay! Consumer affairs helped out here! READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY!

If the guy sounds dodgey or in a hurry to get you to sign, walk away. If it smells rotten, it probably is! I should have walked away from this dealer but the car was too good to let go!

Get everything fixed properly before to drive away - they will not help you later!

As someone mentioned, get Ritter or the guys in Ringwood to go over it and if they resist, like my dealer did, and offer to send it somewhere else 'don't be an idiot like me' and try to help them out for their convenience cause theyre short staffed - walk away!

Get the last owners details and ring them - it is legal for you to ask and get the details, and encouraged by Vic Roads. They have nothing to lose and will give you the dirt if there is any.

The great thing is that there are HEAPS of these things around and when one goes, another pops up. I agree, plenty of misleading adds calling them ES's but just check the front of the owners manual for the vehicles original details.
If you like driving inappropriately around corners in a 4x4 that just shouldn't be that quick, like me , then ACE is for you! I LOVE IT!!!! Best invention ever! Makes me giggle like a school girl every time I see a set of corners that make Jap 4x4's look like a boat! It's eats 80kph+ corners for breakfast.

    Yes I love my car
    Yes I hate my dealer

Just had a look - damn nice looking car!

    regards
    D

    thanks for replies guys.

    DM74 - some questions:

I live in Perht and was planning on buying his car and then having it trucked over and then re-registered for WA. DOes this mean the 3 month statory warranty is void (interstate transfer of reg)?

This model is a 2001 and this year is 2011. DOes this mean this warranty is void (on 10 years)?

What exactly does this statory warranty cover?

What is this 'three amigos' i keep reading about?

THis "Ritter or the guys in Ringwood" - doe sthis imply i need to arrange for the vehicle transported off the dealers site and into someone's workshop for a checkover?

How is this arranged and managed?

I got two inspections done in Victoria ($300 ea) by a company called State Roads. No trouble to travel wherever, very comprehensive report and LOTS of pics.
and its nearly all turned out true

looks like the black es i originally enquired about on this thread is now sold.

i probably did not do myself any favour by 'advertising' this vehicle on this thread.

I wont be doing this ('advertising' the car i want on any forum) ever again.

    Thanks anyway guys.

It may have been sold but I doubt someone on here bought it.

The car was in a car yard and the car yard was on a major road. They had the car sitting in the front row most of the time. It was also advertised on the net. So lots of people would have seen it and would have found it if interested in that type of car.

    Good luck with your search.

You can't assume that someone on here has gone behind your back and purchased a car that you were interested in. That's just ridiculous. You've also posted links to quite a few models for sale, which indicates to me that you might still be in the early buying stages. If you really wanted it, put a deposit on the bloody thing and stop procrastinating.

On top of that, carsales/carpoint are the same company and literally receive millions and millions of unique shoppers every month (I used to work at carsales), so it's fair to say that someone who has never heard of AULRO bought it.

    Here's what I'd recommend.

    1. Save yourself the effort and worry by buying a local (wa) car.
    2. If it looks like it needs an inspections, take it to Barbagallo or Southern Land Rover.
    3. Don't assume that we are here to cut your lunch and buy a car out from under you. Even if someone on here did, big deal. Take it on the chin, congratulate them and move on. No point in getting uptight because they did something that you couldn't.
    4. If you want a D2, buy one and prepare yourself for the unexpected and some out of pocket expenses. They are a great car but need looking after.
    5. If you want trouble free peace of mind and better reliability, buy a prado or cruiser. Yawn.

You might want to check a bit more closely into what you have actually bought. The 2003 D2a "S" only came in auto with 7 seats!!!!

That might be my typo. I assumed that anything that wasn't an SE or HSE was an S.

Anyway the VIN number checks out with what's in it, according to the VIN translators on the interweb, so I'm happy.

End of February 2011 picked up a 2003 Discovery 2 S V8... burgundy with tan leather interior, 7 seater no ACE. Had 190k on the clock picked it up for $15k drove it to Sydney with 4 adults and all our luggage (for a 2 week P&O cruise) averaged 15L/100km drove home to Rochester Victoria and then headed north for 4 weeks with 2 adults 4 kids a new rack and basket and all our luggage had a ball. Have put over 8000km on the clock averaging about 15.9L/100km only drama left hand rear airbag sprung a leak replaced that love driving it click the cruise at 100 and watch the others try to maintain the pace...what a laugh....to all those Land Rover owners out there that gave a wave on our first big family road trip thanks for welcoming us to the club

    Regards

    Clarkey
