    Coolant Refill Disco2 TDI 2004

Hi, TD5 Drained coolant(using Rave info) removing drain plug from coolant feed pump and expansion tank cap. On attempting to refill only about 4 litres could be filled befor flow from bleed hole.
Believe two possibilities. All the old coolant did not drain or new coolant not getting into system.
    Grateful for any advice.

Len, I'm a bit worried about this also, I want to change the top hose on one of our TD5's, soon as.
I believe the way is to unclip the header tank hold it up above the radiater level, hose is apparently long enough, fill and alow air out of the bleed screw on the top hose. ?

Others talk about parking it facing up a hill???, not sure if the LR boys do that at the workshop though.

I would like some advise too, and not from 2007 but current advice from those that have done it without a problem

Instead of being concerned with the age of the advice,,
be concerned about the experience of the poster

Have done this three times in the last two weeks on a 2004 TD5

1 Put a bucket under the drain hole to collect the old coolant.

2 Mark the bucket to record how much came out.

3 Mix up the new OAT coolant to the marked level. That is how much has to go back. About 9/10 L should have come out.

4 Raise the expansion tank 100 mm you need to push it towards the motor slightly and then up towards the brake booster and then up. There are few hoses that need to be unclipped near the battery. Put a block of wood under the tank.

5 Remove the bleed screw. Be careful if it is old it could brake off and then you will have to drill the plastic out.

6 Put drain plug back in

7 Start filling make sure the car is not pointing down a hill. Up hill would help. At this point don’t fill past the cold level.

8 You are not going to get it all back in first up.

9 Eventually you will see bubbles at the bleeder.

10 Put the bleeder in when you have a small fountain of coolant and no air.

11 The bleeder should be finger tight and then half a turn. If it is plastic think about buying a brass one. If you have an engine saver from the guy in QLD his plastic is much better than the original

12 Put the cap on and the expansion tank back in place. Have a look how it slides in and then locks into place before you try.

13Take it for a run let it cool refill

14 Keep filling to you get it all back in.

15 I can usually get about 7 L back in first up. And the fest goes in the next day.

    The top hose

1 Before you start have a look at the hose that goes from just under the bleeder down to the metal pipe. If it has the original clip don’t even think about draining the system until you have got the clip off. If it is a screw type make sure you can get at it. I had to remove the fan to get at it. Not much of a problem if you have the big spanner and the nut wants to play the game.

2 When you pull the hose away from the metal pipe and you will be under the vehicle make sure you head and eyes and out of the way. Oat has a very sweet taste.

the easiest way to deal with the td5 or the d2 is to do the coke bottle method.

I generally use a 2l coke bottle start by removing the cap and the safety ring it usually leaves behind on the neck of the bottle. Fill the system as best you can then fill up the coke bottle, invert it into the expansion tank and press it down by hand after you start the engine. as the engine heats up and purges the air into the expansion tank it will change places with the coolant in the coke bottle.

Takes a couple of goes to get it right but once you've got it down its easy.

    Thanks NoelJG,
I'll get my hoses from UK supplier and get onto it the way you described. Cheers.

Changing the top hose using should be no problem using the above method. I just raised the front of the car by lifting the frontwheels on a couple blocks wood to allow the air in the engine to escape.
Changing all the coolant, I'm not so sure if all the old coolant drained out even with removing the bottom hose.
