    No worries mate. We probably didnt think we had to do a lot of convincing - the look, shape, ability, relative reliability of the D2 really speaks for itself

    Good luck, and I mean that. I have only had a couple of friends/relatives with very early build P38A and you couldn't have given me their trucks. Get the latest you can with the best service history.

    not much info from the D2ers cause were out there driving mate.

    P38 owners have more time to post cause their cars are in the workshop and they cant get to work, hence better access to a computer....

    I recon they're just buttering you up so they can finally sell their cars,

    Is that enough passion 4 ya?

    I bought a 2001 TD5 to replace my 95 P38.
    It had leather and ACE it was a better car yes......but i couldnt go past the P38 every time i drove her i thought why am i selling it (trying).

    3 months later i got rid of the TD5. Yes great engine.Yes handles very well.Yes it was newer.

    I sold it
    It had no charisma, my brother inlaw loves it.

    Im not sure that a D2 is better of road either, that EAS is pretty handly on the 38.

    Now have a good look under the bonnet of a TD5 they are a night mare waiting to happen hoses everywhere. The 38 is way easier to work on.
    Most of the stuff that goes wrong on a 38 can easily be overcome.

    Granted if you want to take one around Aus i would take some time getting fasmiliar with a P38 before leaving.

    I am confident enough with mine to go pretty much any place in it.

    If you are worried about money get a gas 4.0 D2

    If the p38 4.0 is anything like our 4.0 D2a I would disagree!!

    are the coil packs in the same spot on a p38 as they are on a disco 2? if so go and replace the coil packs or ignition leads and tell me they are easier to work on

    That would be the only thing mate and getting 200,000 out of the packs and taking an hour to change is hardly a hardship. Plenum does not need to come off either but some of the skin on your knuckles does. Cheers

    When i bought my TD5, i did the right thing by it and dropped all oils and fluids and changed every filter on it.
    Shortly after the water pump and the fuel cooler started to drip.
    Dont get me wrong i love these engines.
    I re O ringed the fuel cooler, access is cramped it is a fiddly thing to work on.
    Replaced the water pump you are working blind on this job.
    Refilling the transfer case is not particularly accessible.
    An oil and 2 filter change is pretty damn messy, what genius would put the oil filter right under the exhaust manifold, no wonder it has a liquid oil cooler on it.
    Injector harness started to play up on a trip so i changed that as well.
    Complete rebuild on the handbrake assembly (due to rattles)
    Replaced the engine mounts.
    I next thought (after reading and the low coolant engine failures) i would change all the hoses. $$$ and how many are there??
    All up i did more work in 3 months of ownership of the TD5 than i have done on the P38 in 10yrs of ownership and the TD5 had 50k Km less on it than my P38.
    And this TD5 had a full service history.
    My Brother inlaw wanted a D2 so i sold it too him he loves it and i must say it did look pretty damn good last week it is a great car, but i dont like sitting up against the door frame in them the stock headlights are crap.

    The drive home from the Blue mountains in the P38 was a delight, and without doubt it is way easier to work on, for me.
