Question Panel repairs & costs - "not my fault bingle "

    Hi All,
Well… landyprincess had her first bingle yesterday when a person decided to reverse into her, so aside from being annoyed and inconvenienced (to put it politely) with having to run around and get quotes…. Could some folk please add their input to my questions below as I have been given ‘conflicting’ information from different repair centers.

    I’ve attached a photo to help…

    1. The area where it’s torn, is it true that they can be welded back together?
    2. Is the guard aluminium or steel?

    Now for the conflicting information:

A: one place said the corner pieces could be welded back together, another place said it couldn’t!

B: One place said the door skins were only aluminium not the rest of the panels – is this correct or not?

Damage is all on the RHS front panel and a couple of chips of paint near the corner of the bonet. Interesting to note that the quotes have varied between 500 odd to 1500 odd, just waiting on one more to come through !!!

In my 18 years of driving/riding experience i've never had an accident so if this person doesn't stay to his word... where to from here for me? as he said he would pay for the damage.

Are there also any specific questions that I should ask of the panel repair shops?

    Landrover is a SII 2000

Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it…

    Lp

I believe all the panels are aluminum, I'd be asking to maybe get a second hand bonnet & guard & spray them the right colour?
Welding such thin aluminum can be a pain as it doesn't take too well to heat & if done wrong it'll warp then they'll just fill it with bog anyway which you don't want.

Thanks for the suggestion.... the bonnet doesn't need replacing it's just a few chips out of the paint from the utmost corner but def needs some touchup - which i'd be happy with. The quote that came in at 1500 quoted "supply RH/F guard - 440.... and interesting that one place charged 95.00 and the other 70.00 for the indicator headlamp too... personally I think it's a big pile of BS that prices are so exhorbitantly different!

I'm thinking the better option may be for me to maybe just get a quote from TRS for "a" FR/H panel and indicator lamp to be shipped to me and then get a quote for it to be resprayed & fitted!! Hell, I'll even fit it myself if I have to LOL! I'm so over this...

Have you guys had your little princess yet?

    Cheers,
    Lp

for sure replacement of the wing, they could possibly straighten the bonnet.
Your bonnet is steel your wing is aluminium.
Yes you can weld both aluminium and steel, just harder to weld aluminium.

It really depends on your insurance company, some do new for old, some do like for like.

If I was repairing it without insurance i'd look around for a used wing and bonnet, cheaper to replace used than repair. The labour and respray would be the most costly.
Just make sure they spray and not use a touch-up stick.

just my 2 cents, thinkg is with a forum if its not black and white you may get conflicting advice.
Maybe someone here on aulro is a panel beater?

    Hi.
I had similar damage (due to kangaroo strike, even with steel bullbar) fixed under insurance a few years ago.
That panel looks economically unrepairable. My repairer had to repaint the bonnet and door to colour match the new panel. Total cost to insurer was around $2000 but that included new front and side indicator lenses and some straightening of parts behind the headlamp.
Your insurance policy may include 'uninsured motorist' cover if the other party is uninsured or does not want to claim, with the insurer pursuing them for costs. A police accident report is usually needed if you have to go down this path, at least in SA.
By the way most of the D2 body is alloy with the exception of the roof turret, door skins and a few other bits.

    Good luck,
    Jay.

Sorry to hear of your plight.

If you can get a correct colour second hand panel from a wrecker, it should maybe 1 hour to replace. This is not a difficult job.

Smash repairers normally quote $200 - $300 per panel for re-spraying, provided no other repairs are required. Then there is labour at $80 per hour Plus, Plus. I doubt there is little if any work required on the inner guard.

The $500 quote would allow for repainting using a second hand panel I dare say.

The more expensive quotes are possible using a new panel which for a D2 front guard I am guessing will be around the $600 mark alone, or just don't want the work.

Thx for the reply, Quote 1 is to repair my existing guard, quote 2 is for so much more work which I think is a bit overkill to be honest... and you are right - would say they don't want the work! The latter said if it went through insurance it would be more expensive again!!!

I've got a list of wreckers to call monday am including TRS (and will send them an email) as getting a guard to match may be a good option too...

    Break down of costs below...

    QUOTE 1:
    $564.00 quote:
    remove & refit RH/F guard hardware only & indicator - 41.00
    Repair RH/F guard proofcote 168.00
    Paint - Metallic 3, mix n match, oven allowance - 209.00
    RH/F indicator 95.00

    ------------

    QUOTE 2

    Remove & refit
    RH/indicators 20.00
    inner mud guard 40.00
    f/door hardware 50.00
    F/bar 60.00
    rh sill + panel + mudflap 30.00

    Paint
    RH/F guard in / out (3 layer) 200.00
    Bonnet blend 250.00
    RH/F door blend 180.00
    Mix n match 60.00
    Oven allowance 75.00

    Supply
    RH/F Guard 440.00
    RH / F indicator headlamp 70.00

thanks for the input folks.... much apprecaited :-D

    Lp
