Question $295.00 air intake snorkels - alright quality?

Anyone had any experience with the $295.00 air intake snorkels? Both Triump Rover Spares (TRS) and the local Jag Spares in North Hobart have quoted me $295.00 for an air intake snorkel, however the big chain 4WD shops have been about $200.00 more expensive! Just wondering if anyone has used on of these cheaper models and if they build quality and fitment is good?

I haven't had one of the cheapies as I have had the Safari ones as fitted by LR on both my D2's but I have it on pretty good authority from someone who has fitted several of the cheaper ones that the fit is ordinary at best. The template is harder to use and less than accurate(remember that you are cutting into your pride and joy here) .

I'm pretty sure that LR would have supplied a cheaper one if it was of sufficient quality and ease of fitment if they could have.

I'd be getting on the net and hunting down a Safari if it was me

eBay.com.au has them from $220.00 from the UK (not sure how much postage is though) - LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 / TD5 ,SAFARI STYLE SNORKEL (eBay item 370495106284 end time 21-Apr-11 09:13:09 AEST) : Vehicle Parts Accessories

However, it looks cheap and nasty with the head on it not being separate. It's fixed as one piece which just doesn't seem right. The Safari setups look far better, but then they are almost twice the price. The cheapest I've found in Australia is $503.00 plus postage using Google.
However, if you purchase from the UK ( http://www.firstfour.co.uk/raised-ai...419-649847.php ) only $284.00 at the current conversion rate, plus postage - bloody amazing that a product by an Australian company is cheaper to buy internationally and import in!

Sorry mate, can't recall, but I saved over $100 compared with Aussie prices.
Send them an email, they reply promptly.
You don't even need to feel guilty about buying overseas, as they are made in Melbourne anyway.

Should get them to put there order through from the UK and then they can just ask Safari to post them direct to the customer instead of it going from Australia to the UK and then back!

I have e-mailed them for a freight quote and will advise once it is received.

    I heard back from them:

    The first response:

I then contacted their Australian supplier:

    Hi Scott
Due to size of Box postage from Uk was last time aprox $230
I have 2 snorkels left which are safari and are $490
If you know some one who lives on the hume hwy to melbourne then Ican drop it there as I will be passing through quickly next weekend.
I can get a price for you on monday in regards to postage and let you know.
    Regards
    Ben
He never got back to me with a price on postage.
I e-mailed First Four Offroad again asking for a quote on freight from the UK:

    Scott

We can ship direct to you, but due to the volume of the box the snorkel is packed in the shipping is very expensive. The cost to send one over is £94.27.

Please contact me again if you need any more details.

    Regards

    Peter

At the current exchange rate on XE - The World's Favorite Currency and Foreign Exchange Site that equals a total of AUD $422.40 delivered to your door step which is still $68.60 cheaper than buying from their Australian supplier who I would still have to pay additional to in order to cover freight. With the size of the box is it reasonable to expect freight to be around $20.00 to $30.00 meaning almost $100.00 saving by buying from the UK as suggested earlier by biggin.
I'm going to order one next pay as I've decided for the extra $130.00 over the cheaper snorkels it's probably worth it for features, build quality and fit quality. If anyone else is interested in having an additional one sent with it in order to try to save on freight, let me know (prefer someone in Tassie so that I wouldn't have to forward it on again when it arrives).

Just saw this when looking at prices on ebay Landrover discovery snorkel (eBay item 140529884593 end time 07-Apr-11 19:35:43 AEST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats
It's an auction, worth a look to see if price doesn't go too high.

Edit: Maybe not, seller has 0 feedback. If you pay by paypal however they are pretty good with their insurance, and the feedback might help keep the price down.
