[/QUOTE]I know this what LR recommends. But I have seen heaps of TD5's fitted with steel locating dowels and had no problems. Has anyone seen cracking of heads due to fitting steel dowels to early TD5's or is this a myth from LR not to pay head gasket claims on early TD5's
Well I might be finding out first hand this week.
My head was machined 6 thou and steel dowels fitted 10k ago and I am now losing coolant.
Thoughts at this stage are crack around an inlet valve/ port. Have done all the usual checks and have no pressure in the header tank so its not on the compression side. Motor runs sweet all the time though has an occasional rough start after its been hot.
Exhaust manifold has been off and all exhaust ports and valves are clean with no indications( works boroscope is an awesome tool)
Couldnt wind my way through the inlet without getting the camera dirty so manifold off on thursday.
I will let you know what I find.![]()

Forgive me for going off the thread content, but had the pleasure of hitching a ride in an Army Pilatus Porter S.T.O.L. aircraft whilst serving in Darwin- a most amazing experience! Not very fast, but take off and land in just about it's own length, the pilots put on a show for the locals at the cattle station we went to [ muckity, I think] bought the house down, Bob.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
