Suggestions for a D2 essentials toolkit?

    Hi All,

I'm on the verge of becoming the owner of a 2000 TD5 with 137K on the clock - providing Ivan Clarke gives the car the thumbs up on Monday. Having read through this forum I'm entering into ownership with a degree of trepidation and a long mental shopping list of the potential disasters that are likely to occur as soon as the Disco sets wheel out of the dealers yard.

So in preparation I'm looking at putting together a toolkit containing what I'll need to do most maintenance tasks on the car.

I've found a list on a US forum that might provide a starting point, but I'm uncertain about accuracy of the mix of imperial and metric tools.

    • 30mm socket for the nuts that hold the radius and trailing arms to the frame ears (also fits the nuts holding on the transfer case output flanges)
    • 15/16" socket and wrench for the for the fasteners that hold the radius and trailing arms to the axle
    • 2 1/16" hub nut socket
    • 12mm 12-point socket for the exhaust manifold bolts
    • 13mm 12-point socket for the brake caliper bolts
    • 9/16" socket and wrench for the driveshaft bolts
    • 17mm wrench and 17mm deep and shallow sockets (there are M10 bolts everywhere on the Disco and your Hella 4k's are M10 as well)
    • 19mm wrench and sockets for your OME shocks
    • 13mm wrench and sockets for your rubberized shock tower securing rings (and 13mm is another very common size)
    • 11/16" flare nut for your female-ended Paragon hoses
    • 14mm flare nut for your male-ended Paragon hoses
    • 9/16" 12-point socket for the bolts that hold the brake rotor onto the hub
    • 17/16" impact socket for your wheel lug nuts
    • Pozidriv 1,2,3 and 4 (I think the set screw on your parking brake is a Pozidriv 4)
    • 9/8" wrench for your crankcase drain plug (this also works on your Power Tank's regulator flare fitting)
    • 22mm wrench and socket for your panhard rod bolts
    • a very long 14mm wrench for the 12-point bolts that hold the swivel ball housings to the front axle (a socket won't fit here)
    • 11mm socket for the swivel ball level and drain plugs
    • 1/2" square socket for your swivel ball fill plug

    Does this sound about right?

    cheers
    Paul

it comes down to how much maintenance work you want to do.... Theres some tools your listing there that dont fall into the catagory of routine maintenance or regular breakdowns (like the 14mm long handled ringy for the axle/swivel ball joint bolts)

D2's dont usually have swivel ball level and drain plugs, being grease filled from factory.

Thanks, I was hoping to avoid the trade tool kit outlined in the post you linked to andwanted to assemble a tool kit that covered what was required to carry out maintenance work on the d2. The intention is that I'd carry the kit in the disco.

Thanks. So it seems the imperial sizes aren't really required on the d2?

Don't know why you have imperial spanners and sockets in that list

Anyway you'll need Torx sockets for the swaybars and various bit on the car as well, make sure they are the solid type not the ones with the hole.

A breaker bar and viscous fan spanner for when you need to take the radiator out and in.

Redneck, it was a list from a US forum, and I was a bit skeptical of the sizes given. Probably the nearest imperial fit for the metric used.

So what size sockets and spanners are actually required?

I was going to say, I seem to use a 10mm spanner/socket all over the place, and the viscous fan spanner would be an absolute essential if only for the belt.

    cheers
    Nick
