    Taking the first steps

I have just scored a new job and will have to give up my company car.
I have always loved Land Rovers, particularly the Discos and am searching for a decent TD5 for use as commuting and the odd tour/camping expedition. I have just spotted the following on tradingpost and would like some opinions from those in the know on whether its a good deal (planning to offer $12k cash if its decent) and things to look out for.
    1999 Discovery TD5 ES

My new job is shift work and is basically 4 days on 5 days off so i will have plenty of time to work on the car as needed and I am pretty good mechanically so plan to undertake most servicing/repairs myself where possible.

    Interested in your opinions.

    Thanks in Advance.

Firstly, welcome to the forum and the Landy family.

I'm new to the LR thing also having bought a 1999 Td5 recently.

From my research on here and on the interweb I was able to deduce some of the following:

    * there is nothing that beats having a very close read of the logbooks and seeing what has been done over the years and by whom,
    * the more electrickery that the vehicle has ie. power seats and maybe in the ES sunroof/s, the more gremlins that might visit from time to time - and some of these problems can be expensive to fix (it's just dawned on me that the term I should be using here is probably "exxy" but I'm okay with typing the extra few letters needed in this instance) ("electrickery" should be a word though)
    * 205k is about right for the model year - again, the service history (which Range Rov might be able to supply from their records system) will be telling as to what has been done or missed)
    * I don't recall seeing mention of it in the ad so you'll need to see under the bonnet to find out if it's got ACE. This is a fantastic addition to the Disco 2. If it has this you'll know by the 2 x filler caps on the passenger side of the engine bay - 1 will be power steering fluid the other the ACE system filler.
    * SLS/Airbag suspension is sought after by some and removed by others as it could be problematic when/if it failed/got tired. I'm sure some D2 owners with SLS will be along at some point to add to this.

All in all though it looks to be in primo condition and if I'd seen that vehicle 3 months ago I'd have been very interested in the report that came back from the inspection.

If it all checks out you'll have nabbed yourself a bargain I'd say.

There's a bloke in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne who is highly regarded when it comes to pre-purchase inspections. Sorry I can't recall his name right now. Someone else may be able to assist, ie. a non-Queenslander!

Have you taken the vehicle for a drive yet?

    You rang ?

Fear NOT the SLS, for the SLS is GOOD !

... yaye says the SLS owner

It's actually a pretty simple system. Springs wear out ... so do airsprings. Replace 'em. The self levelling function is excellent. Load it up and it sags. Close doors and start the engine & up she comes. Add a trailer, and it self levels. No more headlight poor aim issues when loaded. You can raise the SLS for extra rear clearance.
You can temporarily swap to coils for any hard extended offroad touring (dissable the SLS) and refit airsprings when you return.

    Good luck with it.

... now in reply, it's the D2 Coils team ...

Looks like a solid unit depending on service history. Of course so did mine at first even with two inspections. New engine & auto later, at least it's a known now. Check the heater operation, the only thing that I, and thew two inspections failed to check , checked A/c as usually thats an issue just not heat. Every LR I've had have heat before you let go of the key. Turned out hoses were plugged in pipes due to heater leak, removed plugs, heater leaks, blows head gaskets.

Get the best test drive you can, and make sure it's got the CDL (not sure of 99 modekl having it).

Oh and coils for simplicity, you can add airbags to them anyway.

A 99 model won't have centre diff lock installed from factory, but will have the internals in the transfer case to have it installed if you want it.

I don't think having Cdl is important at initial purchase time. A solid base is what you should be looking for.

If RangeRov are selling it, then you can breath a little more easily. They wouldn't sell one if it wasn't right. They do good work! (recently did my heads). It also has a 5 year warranty.

Being an ES 7 seater, it will have SLS and ACE. Bonus!

Good price for a TD5 too.

    Three words. Go for it.

It's a nice looking truck for that money. I just paid $13.5K for a 2000 TD5 Auto with 208K, ACE and standard interior.

It's only just been listed so don't expect them to move on the price. It will sell at $14K and I'm sure Range Rov know that. I'd personally be test driving asap (as in "what time do they open this morning??") if you are serious because I suspect it will sell quickly.

    cheers

Thanks for your advice, I will try and get up there as soon as I can but due to living in Geelong I'm not sure I can make it today. I didn't really want to go as high as $14k but I may be able to stretch the budget (if i can talk the wife into it haha)
Is the 5 year warranty worth it or does it come with a lot of fine print and conditions eg. must be service by Range Rov??

No idea mate... It would depend on who is offering the warranty.

Give them a call to find out!
