    TD5 Auto Cooler Upgrade

I am doing some pre trip preparation work to my D2 2001 TD5 auto and as such was planning to service the tans & change the cooler hoses but I was wondering if I need to install a bigger cooler.

There an auto trans mob in Perth that can fit a bigger cooler (thanks for the info Mike 2 Rocks) they tell me they have done the mod to a few TD5 Auto’s

I’ll be doing the Canning stock route so it will be hard going in a heavily loaded vehicle & my long term goal is to do a lap of Oz towing a camper trailer

So my question is, is the bigger cooler required & has anybody done this mod & what were the results?

    Thanks Roger

    Hi mate!

Just upgrading mine whilst the front is apart...

    I'm fitting a P38 Transmission cooler...
Just requires some new hoses made to suit (which removes the ones on the D2 which pop off occasionally with entertaining results.

As to your question of "need"..

Are you going to tow? If not, I'd say dont worry about it... Consider fitting a temp gauge in the oil pan and monitor the temps.... Getting too hot - just slow down or take a 5 minute crib break.

Any improvement, that helps keep ANY fluid system at optimal temperature has benefits in longevity etc.... Its a case of use vs cost vs risk.

In my case 2500kg boat will work the transmission too hard for my liking on the standard cooler. I have a Madman EMS with a sensor in my ATF so I'll be watching it anyhow!

I'd recommend going the P38 cooler.... A nice fit, and wont add hot spots in front of the Cooling system like an after market add-on.

    Just re-read your post....

If you're going to replace the hoses, then I'd say go the P38 cooler.

How much were you quoted for the add-on?

    Tombie2,
    I was quoted $800 fitted.

i have had a look on Rave & the P38 cooler sits off to the side behind the bumper? is this the one your refering to? & did you mount yours in front of the radiator?

I had to replace the cooler after it developed cracks and started leaking. Not the sort of thing you want to have happen in the bush and I heard it was pretty common.

How much more robust is the P38 cooler? Also what is involved in changing the hoses at the transmission end?

The P38 cooler is mounted in the same spot as the original cooler in the D2...

I dont know how successful I will be, as its all back together, but will endeavour to take some pics once I get the vehicle home in the morning. (Flying to Adelaide to collect it tonight).

P38 Cooler has screw on fittings, and I had custom high pressure hoses made by the local Enzed guy to suit....

Its happened to a few people.. I am not one of them, my vehicles been really good overall.. But several have had a trans hose pop off.

Yes, the D2 has a push on fitting and they can come off...

I have a 2.5t boat and trailer to tow now, so just upped the cooling using this modification.

Since I'm having a few heat issues with my auto, is the P38 substantially bigger than the original fitment?
