Doors are steel

Guards are aluminium
Bonnet is aluminium
Quarter Panels are aluminium
Some rust is known to happen at the base of the window frame, and chassis. I'm sure others will add some more, but it's not a common problem.
sorry just two more questions, then i'll buy it. Then you can see some pics.
where are key spots to look for rust.
I have heard that if a engine over-heats once, it is more prone to over-heating later, is this true?
also something inner lines slipping, i dunno.

oil pump bolt
comp gasket set
radiator
sensor,
clutch,
windoe regulator
gear & trans box seals
drive belts,
head bolts,
oil & oil filters
coolant
the above list is what i have been quote that will be done in exchange for $7000
is this reasonable.
also what items in the above list would a noob, such as myself, be able to do, to get down costs?
If you are serious about getting a D2, buy a copy of the RAVE cd (see SHOP section on this site).
And, if you search the web, there are many tutorials for most of these jobs, that will make it easy for you to do yourself.
See our Urban Panzers site here for a start. www.discovery2.co.uk
To save money, I would look at purchasing all the parts myself. Get a list together and get quotes from Britain, US and Australia. A bulk purchase will reduce the shipping costs substantially.

as i am new to landrovers i cant be bothered and don't have the time to source all the parts.
i would just like to know what jobs on my list are easy.
for example, from previous experience on me VE holden i know that replacing oil and filters is an easy job, i also know that pouring coolant is easy.
All do-able by a moderatley competant home mech ... with the right tools, except maybe the clutch (and a comp' gasket set implies a complete engine strip-down ... maybe not)
But for a noob ... ??
Cyl head
oil cooler,
oil pump bolt - maybe ?
comp gasket set
radiator - maybe ?
sensor, - which one ? maybe ?
clutch,
windoe regulator - maybe ?
gear & trans box seals
drive belts, - yes
head bolts,
oil & oil filters - yes
coolant - yes
The maybe's depend upon your "pull-apart-re-assemble" and spannering skills. If they are good then the other items might also be do-able, but are far more involved.

although i can do all of the ones you have said yes to, i have one problem. the mechanic is going to drain all oil and coolant so he can do his work, and if he doesnt replace the oil, fiters and coolant then i wont be able to drive away with it.
so if i do the work before it goes do the mechanic he will drain it any way.
So it goes to the mechanic ... and then you get it back ... with a bill
Like you said ... no point as the mech' will do these anyway.
