Fuel Cooler leak can i delay the fix?

We are 3,500k's into our trip through the NT and Northern Queensland. The TD5 has been running beautifully however i noticed this morning in Alice Springs that one of the seals in the fuel cooler leaked overnight. Reading from the posts both seals should be replaced however i was wandering what your thoughts are as to leaving it for now considering we are about to enter much warmer climates where the problem might resolve itself until later and maybe have it done when in Townsville where i plan to have the oil changed.

Has anyone run there car for some time after noticing this problem.

    Regards

You should be OK - just keep an eye on your coolant level and keep it topped up - probably won't need much though.

They usually leak overnight in cold conditions and are OK once running and warmed up.

As you've probably read in other threads on the subject, new 'O' rings (preferably Viton) and a couple of narrow (if you can get them) hose clamps, to replace the specialised original clamps, will do the job.

When I did my son's Disco, I used two smaller diameter (and therefore narrow) hose clamps on each end of the cooler as narrow clamps of suitable diameter were unavailable.

Have a good run and enjoy the rest of your trip.

    Thanks Roger,

It was close to zero degrees overnight even i wanted to leak overnight. It seals up once running i have ordered the o'rings through a bearing shop in Alice and they will be freighted overnight. I have had trouble finding the thin hose clamps, i will keep them spare incase it gets worse.

    Regards

    Thanks Rosscoe,

We are leaving the cold nights in a couple of days so hopefully it will resolve itself for the short term. I will be keeping a close eye on it. Thanks again to the forum where i have been able to self diagnose and manage and take away the stress due to the knowledge of others.

I will try to reuse the original clips i would just like some clamps for backup just incase i somehow damage the clips or am uncertain how secure they are. As like many things i have done on my D2 this will be a first working with these clips so i would rather be safer than sorry so far from home.

if you are still in Alice I can help you fix it tomorrow Tuesday 12/7. Otherwise keep an eye on the coolant level. Keep and use the originl clamps they do not need to be replaced. The upside is that they dont "blow out" like a hose can
    Let me know.

    cheers

I agree, you can reuse the original clamps.
However, if you wish to make life easy, then get yourself a pair of pincers and modify them by grinding a very acute angle on the jaws, as in the following pictures.

They work a treat and save heaps of cursing when trying to refit those clamps.
