    Transmission Noise...

    Hi all

I've got an 04 Discovery Series IIa TD5 Auto. I've recently noticed a noise which appears to be coming from the transmission. It only seems to occur when coasting, and would be best described as a "rubbing" noise.

It's speed dependent, and if I shift the transmission into neutral, appears to go away. It also seems to be worse at low speed.

I'd really like someone to tell me that it is in fact not the transmission and is a common problem that is a $10 fix... but I'm not optimistic!

    Cheers

    Matt

Check the DC join on the front tailshaft !!

    Do it.

    Do it NOW !

If it's not that, my apologies

.... history has shown that this is a far to common failure, and WHEN it fails it will flog the underside of the D2 to peices, and smash the side out of the autobox ...

    ... do it now!

I second checking the front propshaft, its a common failure....

If you remove it all together you can drive it still if your model is a manual diff lock vehicle. I would avoid high load and off road use though and only run it with just the rear tailshaft for testing or to transport it to a mechanic.....Check oil levels too....sorry if im assuming you know less than you do.

Replacement front tailshaft $350, from memory, and that was a good price. Ive built up a rebuildable one using bolt in commodore cvs, smoother and longer lasting and bigger angles. The cvs are out of the rear half shaft post diff, so in a pre diff application they are heaps strong enough.

if it is the front driveshaft, I had mine rebuilt at Knox Driveshafts in Ferntree Gully. Very good pricing and great service.

Definitely not the front prop-shaft... Took it out and the noise is still there!

    All fixed!

Well now that my wallet is $2300 lighter I thought I should report back with the diagnosis!

Took the car to Ritters (Hope its Ok to name names here!). One of the guys came for a drive, and diagnosed a bearing failure on the intermediate shaft of the transfer case. Quoted 2400ish for the fix, turned out to be smige under 2300.

I've now got the Disco back and what a difference! No more whine from the transfer case and the original noise is gone. They gave me the bearings and they are definitely stuffed!

Can't recommend the guys at Ritters (Craig in particular) highly enough. May not be the cheapest around but they know their stuff and the customer service is fantastic.

    Hi Mattj,

Not sure you want to hear this but I had the entire transfer case rebuilt with new bearings and seals for a tad over $800 bucks. The bearing kit alone is about $250.

So they must have done something else. If so you should find out what...
