It's very easy to remember no matter which engine.
You undo it in the same direction that the fan rotates.
I have to remove the fan from my 2000 Td5. Which way are they threaded ?.
Cheers,
Anthony.

Thanks for that. I thought I'd read somewhere on here that V8's are different to diesels in some of the Rovers but anyways, I'm right to go.
Cheers,
Anthony.
A short sharp tap with a hammer on the spanner will take it off.
Counter clockwise to remove.

I'm confused. Rave manual says it's a left hand thread (undo clockwise when viewed from front (i.e. undo toward near side)). p38arover agrees with this and says undo in the fan rotation direction (clockwise when viewed from front). alien D2 says it's a right hand thread (i.e. undo anticlockwise) which is echoed by 999.
Which way is the correct way?![]()
The fan on a TD5 is a normal thread. It un-does counter clockwise. (looking from the front of the car)
Look at the fan. Look at the fan!
Some engines rotate clockwise, others anticlockwise. Then there is the type of fan belt and how they drive the fan.
V-belts drive the fan in the same direction the engine rotates (using the V of the belt). A serpentine belt usually drives the fan from the smooth (back side) of the belt so the fan will rotate in the opposite direction to the engine.
The fan HAS to unscrew in the same direction that fan rotates.
If it didn't, the fan could unscrew when the engine is running.
Think about it.
