Gawler to Lonsdale isnt too bad. I did 4 years of public transport, 2 hours each way to uni and back in Sydney, so to Lonsdale is fine really. It was a 2nd hand set of springs and shocks from TRS and overall really really worth it. The ride is good and the articulation is good too. The only drawback was the rear ones needed to be Extra HD but thats cool and all part of the risk. For $200 for my new back pair, Ill be able to sell the back set I have on at the moment over ebay as they are almost new. loooooooooooooooooove ebay!

I havent done SkyTrek but been close to doing it twice now. With young kiddies its very hard to get out too often but were getting there. We have a off road camper so we are fully setup and intending to do a trip around oz in 5 years for 2 years, so yeah...its all a matter of time and money all this 4wdriving caper!!!!

The border track is a good track for some serious sand and mud driving. Some books rate it as 4/5 for difficulty and others rate it as a beginners track. Ive done it 3 times now, and personally, I think it can range between 1 and 5 depending on recent weather. If its been raining heaps, the mud portions are impassible except for a Loveday comp truck, while when its dry the sand is REALLY thin and takes some careful driving to get up and over the dunes. When we did it last weekend, it was a good mix of both, but maybe more mud would have been good.

Anyway, have fun and keep the shiny side DIRTY!

The shocks are the Nitrocharger Sport...

As for Border Track - I have yet to ever drive it in "Nice" conditions...
Done it in pouring rain 3 times and stinking heat once...

Was all good and fine when we left home!

One trip, most of the track was under a good foot of water made for a fun trip.... Definitely a good track, and very easy...

It seems that I can get a set of bilstein shocks for a 2" lift from AUS for $1050, but I cant get them from overseas (US suppliers)

I can get bilstein shocks not suitable for a 2" lift from US suppliers for less than half the price of the bilstein ones from AUS.

Starting to think that the lift may not be worth it?

Have you looked at Ebay? Fusion auto in Perth has a kit for like $700 for 2" lift. TRS second hand ones were really good actually. If i did it again, I'd simply get some extra HD ones myself and give them to them to install along with 2nd hand front springs and shocks.

Tombie...I know the feeling of doing it in the rain. Last time i did it, we rocked up, setup camp, and KABOOM there was a cyclone at Penola and we had inches and inches over night! We huddled under a 6x6 tarp as it flodded al around us. Overall, had fun though!

Barney: could you give me the link to the ebay sale please? I had a quick look but its not easy on the phone!

Disco disco: thanks for the link! Do you know what size 7100's are suited for a disco 2 for a 2" lift?

I heard OME shocks are Monroe? Made in Thailand?

With regards to springs and shocks, unless you're building a rock crawler, your most likely to go to something tried and tested - catalogue parts so to speak.

I would really recommend to speak to a local suspension shop to get their advise. Decide from there, remember if shocks leaks and springs sag, having to take it off your car and freight it across to another state to get a refund would suck balls not to your car is out of action or you have to replace it with the standard suspension while waiting. Compared to driving in to your local shop, driving out after the warranty job.

I've got raw nitro max shocks +2" front and rear (nice and chunky) - made in Canada and 2 year warranty. Kings springs 2" std front and 2" HD rears.

Definitely recommend heavy duty rears if you carry a lot of weight. Even mine sags down when laoded. Also the rear wheel arch is actually lower than front if the car is level so a taller rear spring actually makes the car look level.

my 0.02... Good luck and have fun!

Just having read this thread, I would fully support the ARB option which Tombie has put forward.

The good thing about the D2 ARB setup is that it has been optimised for the D2, and the shock will give you maximum travel, they will work with the springs well, the sport option gives better traction and the springs are one of the few sets that are spec'd appropriately for the D2 to give comfort and load carrying on the rear and are actually able to support the bullbar with ongoing sagging over the springs life.

Quite a while ago I did a heap of research and development for my own vehicle through Lovells and Bilstein and what my end result is, is very similar to what the OME spring rates are. If you don't like that spec, OME also have options to soften or stiffen it up in the front and rear. This is all well designed and spec'd gear.
    Cheers
    Slunnie
