Anyone know how the reverse park sensors work and able to explain it to me in basics?
In particular what I'm wanting to confirm is that they operate on an altering/changing distance between the sensor and an object, so the sensor sends out some sort of wave or frequency that must ping/bounce off the object, and based on the return the sensor knows the distance the object is away.
So what about if an objects distance does not change, so there is something near the sensor, but it's not moving any closer or further away from the sensor (i.e. perhaps it is attached to the vehicle) - will this still set the sensor off or does it require an actual change in the distance between itself and the object?
And what angle does the beam/waves emitting from them go out on? Just directly straight, or are they spread?
the electromagnetic interference ones dont spread a beam (as explained in the linked page once the vehicle stops moving and the field stops changing behind the car they stop working) the ultrasonic ones do.
their beam is typically 60 or 90 degrees and is aimed at about 45/60 degrees below horizontal to 15/30 above

So are the Disco 2 units ultrasonic or electromagnetic?
The sensors in the Disco are ultrasonic.
If you put something behind the car, then select reverse, it will pick it up, provided it is range.
If you then shut the car down, move your object closer, then start the car again, the sensors will again pick it up.
You would have noticed that as you get closer to something, the beeping speed increases, until it is on constantly.
So, if you back up against a wall, and then leave the car, when you come out again, should you select reverse, the sensors will again measure the distance, and beep accordingly.
Thanks for the info. Trying to sort out the reverse sensors to make them compatible with my new steel rear bar. The two middle units are being set off by the recovery points, towbar and spare wheel...
