Thread: wireless key replacement.

    Angry wireless key replacement.

I lost the spare key for my 1999 Disco II TD5 and am trying to replace it, without being ripped off by a dealership.

I have found another key on eBay that looks identical. I will need to get a blank cut for my car which should not be a problem for any locksmith.

Then I need to get the car programmed to work with the code in the replacement key.

The problem is that my dealership tells me I need a security code trhat was on a tag that was attached to the key when it was sold. I purchased the vehicle 2nd hand 10 years ago and the previous owner did not give me any key tags. The code was never stapled to my manual as advised by the dealership.

My dealership has informed me that he can do nothing. The implication is that If I lose the remaining key I will have to dump the vehicle.

I find this very difficult to believe, not only because I am a radio engineer and I understand how these things should work, but because it must be a common problem that could not possibly have no solution.

At the very least he should have advised me how to disable the immobilizer so I could use the car without the radio key.

However, I can't believe that it is not possible to read the code in the new key electronically and then use that info to program it to the car.

Even if I had the code, he said it would cost me $150 to program it to the car.

Can anyone offer me realistic advice on this, please. I love this car and I intend to keep it for at least another ten years.

Dealers... I'd like to say say something but was told if you can't be nice say nothing

There are 2 frequencies used in the DiscoII for the fobs.
You'll have to confirm which yours is, a search should provide the details but a '99 is the earlier type, like mine
Try some of the online supliers for a new key/fob too.

The fob can be coded to your rigwith a Nanacom.
A list of people who have offered theirs for use by the forum(on a donation basis) is in the http://www.aulro.com/afvb/electronic-diagnostics/ area.
Inside the fob is a 6 digit number used to identify it when conecting to the BCE(Body Control Unit).
A search will provide details of how this is done with the Nanacom.
    Cheers, Kyle

What rot, sorry you have had such bad advice and more importantly unhelpful careless remarks from a dealer

The Dealer has no way of programming keys without the lockset barcode, which was on the key that he was mentioning. Kyle mentioned the 6 digit code inside the fob, well that is the advantage of aftermarket units like Nanocom or Rovacom, Autologic and the like, they can use this to reprogram keys direct to your BCU, something the LR system can't do without the other barcode set of numbers.

I'm going through the same thing myself (Series 2 2000 v8) and couldn't believe what they want from LandStealer, so I bought an alarm fob from BP Utah in the states for 130 dollars - complete with barcode!!
Just about to try and hunt down someone with a nanocom to help me program it......(with a donation to AULRO of course )
    and i'm set.

Is it right that you can't disable the whole sheebang if necessary?? that seems a bit dicey - i.e middle of nowhere and a $100 gizmo pooches you

Be very careful doing them yourself.

I did a brand new second key for ours (LR dealer supplied), and ended up with the engine running, no dashboard, and no functioning keys.....

I did manage to fix it, but I dont know how or why or what happened to break it or fix it. Slamming the drivers door in frustration seemed to be the trigger that 'fixed' it but it wasn't a fun 30 minutes.

Personally I wouldn't attempt key code programming for people with my Nanocom after the experience of what happened on ours.

I have an old school Nanocom with 2.03 firmware if that makes any difference.
