    Cooling fan

O.k, so I am looking at a Td5 D2a and the electric cooling fan seems to be running constantly, the engine doesnt appear to get hot, and the owner says he has never had any problems with it running hot.
What are the possible causes other than an overheated engine logging a code.
    Cheers.

I think it is the electric fan not the viscous one, it sounds consistent and does not change with revs etc, is the viscous electronically controlled?.
I am having another look over it tomorrow, anything I should be looking for other than the regular checks?

    1/ Faulty temp sensor.
2/ ECU Upset during a low voltage situation i.e crook battery. Needs a quick check/ reset with Nanocom or Testbook.
3/ The engine has run low on coolant /overheated and the ECU has defaulted to have the fan on all the time. (may not be the correct technical description but you get the point)

    cheers

    Thanks for that,

The car idles and drives very smoothly, power is adequate but it's no rocketship.
It drives too well to be a headgasket issue (in my opinion), but I don't want to inherit someone else problem.
I will have a more thorough look tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure the air con was off, there was nothing displaed in the control panel.
Does that mean it was off'?

Don't discount head gasket by how a TD5 motor runs. Often they can perform very well with the symptoms well masked without careful inspection. However the D2a is less prone than earlier models.

If the A/C is off,the electric fan should not normally operate.
I would take it to a LR specialist to have it checked as to why it is on or move off to the next one.

As said,a crook head gasket will often not be obvious, but will cost heaps to get sorted correctly.

Oil in the harness could also be causing problems.
