    D2 V8 pinging?

What will cause pinging under load?

    High compression?
Fuel not up to spec 98.
The Thors have a very sophisticated Bosch Motronic management system which relies on knock sensors to hold the timing just on or below pinging.
I have not had the direct experience but would expect faulty knock sensors to allow more pinging, although usually the Motronic will retard under these circumstances.
Another reason could be heavily carboned combustion chambers from too much slow running.( although on my experience on JHB motorways where everyone seems to do 160-200 even in 80 Kmh zones this maybe not the case.
IMHO the first thing to do would be to have the ECU errors read.

Most common causes of pinging -

Poor quality or low octane rated fuel,
    High ambient air intake temp
Engine timing (but yours is electronic and is controlled by knock sensors)
    Carbon build up in cylinders

First thing I would try is a higher octane fuel. If it continues to ping take it for a drive on a cool night or morning and see if it is as bad, it shouldnt be as the air intake temp (cooler) will help eliminate pinging.

It is also very common for engine to ping when loaded up at low revs - solution, dont let the engine labor at low revs, change gear.

    Cheers

    Dave

With knock retard it must be really bad fuel, or something quite suss with the engine management somewhere, not like things without knock sensors, its quite hard to get something with knock retard to ping

Hello Riceburner! Are you there? Can you hear over the pinging?
    Is it High Compression?
    Have you run a Testbook?

use some fuel and top up with 98 or add some octane boost,, cheap test.

The system has to knock to know it needs to retard? but how often does it test itself? (ie lets itself knock)
I read somewhere when the first BMW's came out with this system it self-tests/tunes hundreds of times a minute??
