Over the years I have had problems with the rear door locking mechanism failing to work. So, as a result, am unable to open door from outside, but can open from inside.

I made my own set of drawers and the door locking problem was part of the planning.
I made my drawers just below the internal door handle, so if not able to open from outside can at least get it from inside. Dependent upon what else is packed on top. But I pack accordingly, with failure of actuator always on mind.

I have found that regular maintenance of the rear door lock solves this problem!

As for the above-mentioned fuel pump problem, yes everything needs to be removed, but this is as simple as loosening 3 turnbuckles and lifting the drawers out. After initially unloading everything from the drawers, which is the time consuming part....unfortunately there is no other way round that problem

DRIFTA - Camping Kitchens Start here...

They will custom build/modify whatever you want.

I have the 2x drawers, plus a slide out table, and a fridge drop slide, and the rhs drawer can be replaced with the drifta carback kitchen (or we carry it ontop next to the fridge). The whole setup, including the drop slide, drawers, table & kitchen cost me $2300 (modified per request AND installed). I thin a plain 2x drawer is about $850 (with a slide out table ?) They'll ship anywhere in the country.

Drawer with table above, kitchen on the right

    2 x drawers

    Drop slide & fridge

Kitchen drawer slid out (the kitchen outer case slides out and it's fully stand alone)

Drawer slides out from the left side

And a shot of it in action.
I have the same set up, but with a fourby fitout rack around it.....

Has anyone taken this a step further, and replaced the plastic side storage bins with plywood boxes that come out to "meet" their drawer systems?

Kev, my rear drawer setup looks to be about the same height as yours and I'm now looking at drop slides. Assuming you have the MSA drop slide - can you tell me what size did you manage to fit in, and what height is your fridge please?

Hamish ... tell me more!! Fourby fitout rack ?? Pictures please ?? I assume this gives you some storage overhead ??

Being that I'm a 7 seater, the hole to the rhs carries the hillbilly camp oven bag, shower tent & shower perfectly ... the lhs is pretty shallow as I have rear A/C, but fits fold up flat stools, jimmys thunderbox, and the biji-barbie .... so the only space I have available is overhead above the fridge & kitchen.

I'm travelling these days like the last photo ... rhs drawer in, and the carback kitchen sits ontop next to the fridge where the box of corona is

... unfortunatley, the carback kitch is about 50mm too long, so you can only close the back door when the kitchen is ontop if the back seat is allowed to tilt slightly forward ... but then I usually fold or remove the rhs back seat anyway, so the kitchen fits perfectly ... just need to devise a barrier ... another project.

    Tell me more ...
    Kev..

Gavin, got your PM ... This should answer your questions, and hopefully benefit others in the future.

MSA DS40 drop slide with an ARB 47L fridge. The fridge dimensions are H508mm x W380mm x D705mm (and a smidge more with the transit bag fitted) ... it fits into the slide with a small amount of movement available forward/rear, width (with the transit cover fitted) is pretty much a neat fit.

Here's a pice from the rear, and the dimensions to match.

You notice the 15mm packer peice across the bottom ... was used to support the back edge, and give the drawers a slight tilt forward.

The drawers are 850 deep and touch against the back of the rear seats when they are up ... next two pic's show how far the slide goes on the top of the drawers ... it touches the back of the LHS rear seat when it's up.

... and this will show you how close it all comes to the rear door / rear of the cargo area ...

Notice in the above pic' the DS40 folding handle & the alloy strip across the bottom are virtually level with the door rubber seal ... the DS40 really only just fits, but that's all it had to do!

The height of the drawers in relation to the interior trim ...

These next 4 shots are for Hamish's benefit ... I could have extended the drawer top across my cargo bin / fold up seats space, but it's of more benefit for tall/long/flat objects ...

A platform over the fridge & kitchen to give some overhead storage (though I've lost a bit of roof cavity space with the rear A/C ducting overhead which lowers the roof lining a bit), and maybe mesh down each side still leaves a bit of room for soft gear against the window area each side, and a mesh divider down the middle next to the fridge possibly as well.

I wanted MAXIMUM storage space in the drawers & kitchen, which I acheived (we made the drawers as big as they possibly could be in the rear), and am working around squeezing the rest in as I can ... the barrier will be custom made to go straight up from the front of the drawers (with the rear seats folded/out). All the camping gear, tools, spares, recovery gear, is in the back/drawers (tent, sleeping bags, air beds & chairs on the roof rack), leaving the middle row seat area free for bags, clothes, 20L water jerrys in the footwell area, food boxes, etc. I'm surprised at just how much stuff I can fit in this space when the seats are out !!

Gavin, this was more than you wanted, but hopefully it will assist others in the future ... or if anyone has any suggestions I'd like to hear them

    Here's my setup.

Made to my spec from their standard system by Chuckwagon (I don't think they exist anymore).

    I'm working on some improvements.

    Cheers,

That's a neat fold down table idea ... far better working space than the rear door fold down units.
