Disco D2 TD5 Diesel Fuel economy

I have been hearing that same thing about the K&N filter. Why would the factory paper filter be a better filter then the K&N? I thought it would catch finer elements and hence increase the longevity of the engine. Any other factors i haven't considered here???

K&N increases airflow and therefore engine performance, not filtering performance... It's always a compromise.
I think I've seen some threads discussing the options.

A little while back a member of AULRO (that tests these things for a living) tested several different air filters.

The results are in The Good Oil Forum.

bugger - my 2001 TD5 gets about 8.5 l/100km...and has done for the last 10 years ! and p.s. it has no mods - all stock standard ! Ditch the mods - ditch the wanna-be mechanic advice and stick with a real mechanic that knows the car.

Have checked pretty much everything on the vehicle... and all looks to be fine. I have also exchanged the MAF with 2 other new MAF's I have and it makes no difference.
I have had a problem with the fuel regulator dripping every now and then so this might be worth a look at soon.

I have run the last couple of sets of tyres at these types of pressures without any problems. Obviously you need to adjust pressures for your conditions.. eg @ around 17-20 psi in sandy or rocky conditions... maybe around 25psi when towing my 21'van on dirt roads and around 50-60psi on the blacktop to minimise rolling resistance. Never had a problem with grip, certainly much better driveability on higher pressures (rated at 80psi max) very good mileage from each set of boots and pretty even wear overall.:)
Been around oz a couple of times with these variable pressures and never had a problem ... not even a single puncture !! :eek:

Recommend getting the fuel block replaced - once they start dripping (at about 150k) - they just keeping dripping and wasting fuel. Cheap to replace - $320 for the part - $100 labour

(Fuel Block) I've checked and rechecked the Workshop Manual and I can't find anything to do with a Fuel Block...What is it? Where is it?

I'd like to bump this thread a bit..

I have just bought my first disco 2001 TD5, Auto 175K, ARB Bull Bar , Pirrelli Scorpion ATRs and it has been chipped but I do not know what brand.

I live in Tasmania and do HWY kms with AC on for the wife and kids.(personally I can do without).

Second tank of diesel.

Didn't pay any attention to first as we were loving our car and getting used to it. So filled up to top last weekend (woolworths Caltex) from 1/4 tank to full.

We have done 340kms and are back to about the same line on the fuel filter.

So my calculations say I will get less than 500kms to tank a 65 ltr tank.

Any suggestions as to why I am using sooooooo much fuel?

I only get 450 to 650km from my D2a TD5 automatic. Has Safari snorkel, Unifilter, ECU tuned, increased boost, TD5Alive Booster Box, TD5Alive MAF, performance exhaust, 4" lift, 32" tyres (with the 3" increase in tyres it revs lower at highway speeds and I much prefer the gearing). When I recently rebuilt the fuel pressure regulator the fuel economy improved substantially. Being Tasmania I generally don't have the air conditioning on. The vehicle generally does short trips as my house to work is only 5 minutes away and when towing the boat the beach to launch is only 5 minutes too. I'm interested to see how my new TD5Alive larger intercooler and VNT will effect it, if at all.
