Thread: VIN Check For Replacement Key Fob

Just PM the orig owner & ask if he has had his RF receiver replaced in the roof due to block out (being blocked out from interference, mainly from shopping centre scanners etc that use the same frequency) & this will answer the question.

Hi Guys,

A set of slippery fingers at the local boat ramp resulted in the keys going in the drink, they were retrieved but after checking for water ingress (surprisingly dry) and put the cover back on she don’t work. So I need a new key.

From this discussion am I to assume that my ’99 TD5 “could” be one of 2 frequencies and of course we need the right one? There was work done to it under warranty when we had problems with the keys way back, but I’ve no clue what was done or changed.

What do people think is my best way forward?

I would ring the dealer & enquire if the frequency was charged due to block out & see if it recorded in there system.
Could you elaborate on what the problem you had with the keys was?

If you can't get the required info from the dealer, then I guess the only option you have is to remove the headlining and see what frequency is written on the RF module as Pete (Sniergy) posted earlier.

I was lucky in that the VIN check very kindly done by Kev (Fluids) turned out to be spot on at 413mhz. I'd been looking at second hand fobs on Ebay Australia, but they were overpriced somewhat (Some were over $200). A quick look on Ebay UK and I scored one for $46 posted with a new battery. The seller even ran a scan on it for me, he could only get a reading of approx 400mhz as it transmits very fast but that was in the ball park for a 413mhz so I was happy that it was not a 315mhz.

A quick trip up to British Off Road and Dan hooked up his Autologic system and reprogrammed the 4th key slot for $25....Woo Hoo!

Good outcome iPom, doesn't always work that way but sometimes you have a Win.

My other course of action if the key didn't work (because mine was a 315mhz) was to replace the RF module with one that matched....Erich (Bundalene) had one for sale at $40 recentley.

All in, it is better than spending $500 or so at a LR Dealership

Pete - the car is a 1999 and the work was done while still under warranty, to be honest, I can't remember what was going on, but I remember we ended up with 2 new keys - what else is way past my memory. Correct me If I'm wrong but don't the dealers only keep detailed records for 6 years.

Anyway, I thought I'd try a long shot, so I stopped off at a lock smith this morning with the working key, his small scanner says "between 315 and 320". Step 1 answered.

So, If I buy a second hand 315mhz key is there anything I need? Where is the codes that the BCU needs? I have a Nanocom to do the programming.

Or should I just get a new key?

Hi Harlie AFAIK with an Autologic system you only need the code that is on the chip/circuit board inside the fob. New keys do come with a barcode tag that LR dealers use to program the key to the vehicle, although I do not know what method they use. I do not have any experience with Nanocom reprogramming of fobs so I can't help with that query.
I'm sure someone will answer shortly about the Nanocom question...
