I had intermittent srs light some time ago, eventually tracked it to voltage spikes caused by hidden corrosion on battery terminals - cleaned, hasn't come back

Will give it a go, thanks Andrew

    Andrew,

How did you diagnose a voltage spike at the battery terminal?

    Cheers,

took me a while, noticed interior light was changing brightness
weird thing was the corrosion was only affecting current into the battery, cranking was ok
also probably explains why I cooked 2 coil packs
I'm still annoyed I missed such a basic bit of maintenance

    Cheers

After giving your Batt terminals a good clean and refitting everything, give the terminals a light spray over with one of those lanolin derivate protective sprays (lanogaurd is aussie).

seals the terminal and stops corrosion dead in its tracks and is effective till next time you remove a terminal connector and cleans off easily if required.

way better than WD40 and the like.

    cheers

Same with our Toyota Camry. Any chance it was a legislative change, rather than one by the manufactures?

So not a spike, but a loss in volts.

    Found this in Wikipedia
"Metal rectifiers consist of washer-like discs of different metals, either Copper (with an oxide layer to provide the rectification) or Steel plating (plated?) with Selenium , interspersed with aluminium discs (which were often of a larger size, to provide cooling)."

so, if your cable and clamp were different metals, one of which had oxidised, then perhaps you had created a fairly primitive diode/rectifier at the battery terminal, which would explain the voltage drop in one direction only. (In real terms, you would have a voltage drop in both directions, but fairly small in one direction).

I reckon you're right about that diode effect but no it was a spike - light would go really bright for a few seconds, srs light on soon after, light then back to normal, srs light off soon after that

Forgot I also had to change the alternator within a month of it

Thanks to Bundalene for the well priced parts or she'd now be in the paddock next to my old D1 V8
