Would this cause an increase in fuel consumption??

    G'day All,

Trying to work out what has caused a marked increase in fuel consumption. Also fuel light is coming on about 100kms earlier than it used to. My two thoughts are as follows:

    1. A week and a bit ago.....after 3.5 yrs of reliable motoring..Smokey died whilst driving at 100km/hr. Long story short...was fuel pump.........so a new one put in place. (This is my main culprit...just not sure why though)

    2. Smokey is around 1000kms over a service...so not sure if that could cause it.

Note to newish folk.....as long term member would know......I have ZERO mechanical aptitude....but do look hot in leopard skin shorts ,

    Regards

    Stevo

most likely a co-incidental failure of the MAF, map or one of the other sensors.

What happened as it died? This might give a clue.

Could be the float level arm is bent/different to your last fuel pump. Have you checked actual km's travelled per litre from a full tank or are you just going by how the gauge looks ?

As we all know, it doesn't happen without pictures. However, in this case, I think we are willing to make an exception...

When my MAF failed it was was characterised by a dramatic drop in fuel consumption (about the same as yours / tank) plus strange gear shift patterns. Changed through the lower gears OK but often delayed changing through the top gears.

You wont need much mechanical aptitude to borrow a good MAF from a mate and install it to see if it makes a difference, only a 5 min job.

Thanks for the replies. I filled up this morning as the light had come on. Normally the first stop comes in around 8-85 litres......it stopped first time around 70 odd litres. I kept filling till it seemed it would take no more.

Now some extra info........I did notice when I filled it up last that normally when I fill it and whack that extra bit in.....it has always shown on the guage to be "over full" ie past the full mark. The last 2 fills it has shown bang on the full mark...however today it's showing just under the full mark. Normally I fill up once a week....so far have filled up twice so far...so not sure if its the guage or consumption now.

Couple of other things as not sure if related to the fuel pump failure. For some months prior...if fuel was low....when I started it first time....would conk out and do the "tick tick tick" until she fired up. Could that have been a warning sign that the fuel pump was on its way out? When it did die........the first sign for that was overtaking, foot to the floor (not unusual in a TD5 ) and there was a momentary loss of power/ surge then all good.

When it did die....just cut out....no power.....luckily had enough oomph to get over onto the kerb. Also luckily it was Cunningham Hwy 20 kms out of Ipswich and not on the M1.

So is it still sounding like this MAF thing ( note again...no mechanical aptitude ) and what might be the cure...thanks,

    Regards

I don't think your MAF has gone.

Just the fuel float is off adjustment.

    Does it "feel" the same?
