Vibration cured - check the rotoflex

Have suffered drivetrain vibration at 95-100 km/h for some time now. The Disco is an '02 D2 with just over 100k on the clock. After checking UJ's, tyre balance and transmission brake backing plate I finally looked at the rotoflex coupling (rear propshaft to rear diff). Superficially, some fine crazing - nothing much. Bend it a bit and it all opens up. New one fitted in under 30 minutes (didn't do the rubber bush in the propshaft though - it's a scary cold chisel job). The new unit seems "stiffer" - I wonder if the compound has changed?
    Ride is all smooth again.
    Cheers,
    Steve

I've gone through two rotoflexes in under 100k. Once with warning on normal roads (it vibrated under load); and once without warning in the Simpson. The latter was a catastrophic failure. There may have been vibration but you couldn't tell over the corrugations etc. It meant that despite carrying a spare rotoflex, I had to limp out on rear shaft only (with assistance from time to time) as the flanges were irrepairably damaged and one bolt snapped.

So, my advice is, if you go off road with heavy loads, change the rear shaft to a normal cardan jointed shaft (its a common replacement).

If you went the cheapest it would probably be $40 - $50 landed in Australia. (most expensive ~$100)

I buy almost 99% of my parts from OS for this reason.

Ditto. I bought a Hardie spicer rotoflex, bushing and 3 bolts washes and nuts from rovah farm for $70 total. I had looked around after I bought it and found suppliers about the same cost with all 6 bolts for the same cost. Only thing is that you have to wait...

The waiting part has not been a killer for me. Generally two weeks or less and you have the part.

I regularly buy stuff and replace it long before (potentially) before it's cactus (routine maintenance).

When I bought my last one a few years ago (before the great exchange rate) I was offered 3 versions from Karcraft in Sydney. As described by them, Type A was OEM and around $100, Type B was equivalent non OEM coupling for around $80 and Type C was cheaper inferior quality for something less again (I can't remember). I generally find they supply same gear as overseas with about 10% premium.

Hi all - first post in this forum - quick question on the vibration, where did the vibration "feel" if you like it was coming from... I have a vibration in mine that "surges" in and out when its up at about 115km/hr..

I've got a new front drive shaft in so it shouldn't be that. I'll check out the rotoflex tomorrow though and see how it looks. Would be nice to get rid of the vibration before a planned Flinders trip in a couple of weeks.
