Numerous V8's have been to all the places you mentioned ................ and then some.
Provided you can feed it there shouldn't be a problem.

You're not dreaming, as long as you can keep the fuel up to it (carry enough with you) remote touring will be possible. You are mad though and should get a TD5. Diesel is safer to carry and will give you longer range due to the rate of consumption, however you will not get one for those dollars.

Freshening up to me means more than spark plugs and leads. They are service items. You will most likely need to drop the sump and change the bearings, change the camshaft and if you are developing good compression and holding it then you may not have to take the head off, get a head job and do the rings (new pistons maybe). I don't know if the 4.0 is prone to slipping liners.

I had the same idea, but in the end I went for the TD5, I'm glad I did as the fuel consumption is not good on the V8, approx 10 L/100k no matter if offroad or towing, slightly better on highway with cruise control

    All good advice Slug_burner,,
and yes the 4L is prone to slipped liners,, but usually at much earlier kays than that,,

The V8 will do anything and go anywhere the Td5 will,,
it will cost more to do it,,
but cost less to do an engine rebuild.

anyway a V8 is not about fuel--
    its about driving a V8.

if you think with your back pocket,,
    buy a stepTD5through,,

When it comes to long range remote area touring, I think it is about the fuel and the V8 will only go anywhere the TD5 will if you are prepared to carry the extra fuel. If I am going to carry extra fuel I would rather carry diesel due to it's lower flammability.

Went to many remote places in my old D1 V8. Carrying extra fuel is really no problem unless you want to carry passengers. Driving the sand sea in Libya I carried 240ltr of fuel, 80ltr main tank and 160ltrs in Jerry Cans with no problems.
A diesel will never sound like a V8 at full chat.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Your all right, V8 is a choice from the heart, TD5 the head! Somethimes hard to decide for sure. The Disco I want to build will be for meduim range trips mostly (Adelaide up to the Flinders/Vic High Country/Snow) but Im glad to know it would last a possible Simpson Trek too.

Would it be worth getting a compression check done on this motor (213000k's before potential sale. Will this tell me enough about its health? Cheers again!!

It is probably worth paying maybe $2-300 for a full check over from a specialist, also good for bargaining.

The life of a V8 IMHO depends very much on the maintenance throughout its life. V8s do not react well to missed services and thrive on extra servicing such as oil changes every 6 months or say 5-7KK.

My 3.9 now has 210 KK on it and holds 150PSI compression pressure.
There are lots of other things in a Land rover that can cost almost the price you pay for the car.

A V8 would definitely be a great long range tourer if you invested in one of these:
