    Coolant loss

    Hi all,
I wonder if someone has some ideas? My TD5 is using about a litre of coolant every 1000KM. It may be less, as I haven't kept a log until now. I can't find any leaks. It may be my imagination, but the idle does sometimes seem a little rougher than it used to. It's also developed a "jingle" sound under load - lot loud, but enough to be heard in the cabin. Sounds like a loose bracket of some sort, but I can't find anything amiss. Otherwise it's running fine.
The car's done just under 300K, stock everything, and I want to keep it, so I really need to sort it.
    Any input greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Matt

Hi maybe have a look at your fuel cooler. It's the long silver canister just under the inlet manifold. Chances are the front oring is not sealing anymore. Have a Look at www.discovery2.co.uk - Leaking Fuel Cooler Fix. This is a really concise clear guide. There are repair kits on eBay but charging the $35 odd $$$$ is a bit expensive. Get the o rings somewhere local. Good luck.

Check the hose from the oil cooler, under the heat shield near the turbo. A stepped hose, [2 different diameters], it often gets forgotten because it is out of sight. The spigot it fits on to corrodes over time, as well. Same as the water outlet housing at the front of the engine where the water temp. sensor fits. Usually dont show much of a leak until up to temp. I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Might be the following, I'm planning to check mine out soon as I have a similar noise.

What he said. The ancillary stuff like oil cooler, water pump, are alloy and get crap under the hose section that sits over the alloy spigots. This corrodes and voila, a leak. Had it happen on the water pump, the oil cooler and the main coolant outlet housing as Bob described, at the top of the head.

Just curious. do you hear any gurgling water sounds behind the dash, particularly at start up?

    cheers
    Nick

Sorry for the late reply Nick,
no, no gurgling from behind the dash at all - the coolant loss is increasing however, used about 600ml in just under 2000 k's, so I'm seriously gonna have to make some time to have a good look around to try & find the leak. Got a contact with a 4 post hoist, so I can see I might have to put it up in the air to try & find it.

    Hi Matt,

i had the exact same problem some months ago - guzzling coolant and a slight weep at the top radiator hose ends. Seeing as your'e at around 300,000Km i have a question for you - are you still running with the original head gasket ?

In my case the diagnosois was that plastic locating pins in my block had broken and the head had started to "walk" ..... basically the coolant was going out the exhaust pipe and exhaust "blow by" was getting into the coolant system.

Finally tracked the leak - it was the fuel cooler as suggested - thanks for the input guys! Just ordered the O rings to fix. Still haven't got a clue on the jingling though - can't hear it at all with the engine at idle, only when under load. Sounds a bit like someone rattling keys. Any ideas?

Check out the passenger side engine mount heat shield for the rattle/jingle
