    td5 draining coolant

Searched a few threads and not really found the answer....if i want to drain all of the coolant is there an easy way.

If the drain bolt is removed this releases about 5 to 6 litres, but Rave says there is 8 litres from refill or 13 litres from dry.

So there must be a fair bit stuck in radiator....so does that mean remove the hose with the thermostat on to get the radioator empty??

    suggestions welcomed!

I used some hose an blew min out when it was drained, probably got out another litre.
Depending on what you are doing, the best method to remove all coolant is to connect the garden hose to the heater hose and run the motor.

    heater hose

I'm trying to clean out the system so I can start fresh with a new batch of coolant (Nulon longlife Red Oat).

Is that the metal hose just above where the centifugal filter is - there is an offshoot from the top radiator hose that goes to it?

So you have the drain plug removed as well or just put water in the heater hose and have the coolant come ot of the hose you have disconnected?

    thanks

    Yes, that is the hose
Connect hose, leave plug in, run engine

ANychance someone could elaborate on this for me please?
Ive gone and bought new coolant etc. Jumped under the disco to drain the coolant. but there is no drain plug. I see the drain screw on the bottom metal pipe but assume that will only work to remove all the coolant if the thermostat is open.
I found this guide Flushing TD5 Coolant - Defender Forum - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum but seems a massive job for simply changing the coolant.
Is this garden hose into heater hose a good option to complterely drain all existing coolant? (going from green which was in it when I purchased it to Nulan Red)
looking at this pic where would I stick the garden hose?
Or does anyone else have an alternate method for completely flushing the system. Running cold water through the engine seems a bit dodge?

I used the flush with a garden hose method as I did an acid flush, (acetic acid) then multiple 10l boxes of pure water fill and dump, then my preferred coolant.

Sweet. SO I stick the garden hose into the engine where the little offshoot hose is? and then all the water will cycle through and empty out of the hose I have disconnected?

    generally..

remove the heater hose that connects to the cross pipe (for discos) or either of the hoses for the heater (for defenders) shove your garden hose into the hose and (if you want spill control) 19mm hose on the empty barb.

turn on the hose + start the engine.

the alternative is to remove the supply hose from the expansion tank and stick the garden hose into the hose and drain via the spigot.

    The alternate alternate....

drain what you can, poke a 10mm OD pipe into the expansion tank supply fitting through the expansion tank filler neck and syphon the water in

Extra points for blanketing the radiator and removing the fan first if you use the second method. Done right while it takes a while longer to do it will allow the engine to get to operating temp.

thanks. I like the sounds of the garden hose. I just want to clarify though. Is this the hose I needing to stick the garden hose into?
Or if I go for method 2 is the spigot the screw on the solid pipe under the engine?
    Thanks again

    it isn't

follow the hoses that run back through the fire wall to the heater matrix. use those.

or method 2 uses the expansion tank hoses, a spigot is a small section of pipe that a hose connects to.
