    TD5 won't start

Started my 2004 TD5 tonight after having it sitting for 2 hours. Started it, put into reverse. Went to go backwards and it stalled. Went to restart. Cranks OK but no start. S&M lights constant. Suspect low battery. Jumper battery made no difference. It has had previous issues with flashing S&M and being stuck in 3rd after sitting overnight, but has always been ok to restart and clear lights. As far as I know it has had a new xyz switch in the past 12 months. Fuel was getting quite low. Never had it this low before. The last quarter dropped real fast, but is was still obviously running when I stopped initially. A bit of noise in the fuel pump. I'd have thought the jump start would have cured any voltage issues. I didn't think that S&M issues would stop the engine totally. Suggestions?

Could be fuel pump related. Mine did all sorts of crazy stuff when the fuel pump was dying. There is a fuel pump 'jump start' technique of hitting the underside of the fuel tank with a mallet.

May as well try, good luck

You may have run out of fuel. The fuel pump will make a noise just before it gets low and stops.
The problem will be increased if it is parked on an incline.

Is the fuel pump making a noise like its gurgling?

Placed 20L via jerry can into tank. Turned ignition on. S&M lights still on this morning. Primed using 5 accelerator pump trick. Cranked-no start. Cranked again for 5 seconds - start. Major happiness! S&M lights gone. The fuel gauge was reading just over empty. It had gone from a quarter to just over empty in 40km. I had parked on a gentle incline facing up. I was trying to see how far a tank would go around town. Looks like I found out.

flashing S and M equals poor battery condition- 1st point of check.

have you had you batt load tested? how old is it?

I'm aware of the battery issue. Built in battery light is glowing green, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. The battery seems to be about 1-2 years old but has no other identifying ratings or even brand. I think the fact that the car stalled in reverse and did not restart may have freaked the auto out. As soon as it started this morning it was all good. Even after jumping from another vehicle to check if it was the low voltage issue the S&M lights were still on.

Yeah its just i see so many issues here that guys go digging around for what turn out to be simply a battery a bit low on charge hold ability.

I had a dud that load tested perfectly on an electronic load tester only to fail miserably on the old analogue load tester that the auto elec had sitting at the back of the shop, no longer used because he thought the lectronic one was better. cost me a new starter I didn't need!

most issues on here are sorted very simply and after guys have suspected the really oddball stuff.

just my thoughts on any S n M light issues that involve flashing at any stage.

    good luck with it.

Thanks for the advice. I've been suspecting something is up with the battery. I've been meaning to get it load tested at some stage, but the lights are only happening on startup when the engine is cold maybe twice a week. Usually I reverse out, move into drive and it happens. XYZ switch looks shiny new. I noticed that while fitting the drain extension from the air con. I'd be happy to know what rating the battery has, but no such markings are there.
