Question is.. what your looking for?. It's is economy?. To get a low K TD5 (if you can find one) you may pay up to 5k extra for one which has the same K's as most V8's.

For example i bought a 2001 V8 last year for 14k with 78k on the clock. A 2002 TD5 i looked at with 110k on the clock was 19k. Say for example i kept the car for 3 years then I would be paying an extra 1700 bucks a year / $150 a month to save on fuel?.... Food for thought.
Extra economy equates with extra touring range. I get between 850-900km from a tank in my Td5 Auto (which has now done 230K KM) on long highway trips. Based on forum reports a V8 owner would be searching for a petrol station after around 450-500km. If you are doing much country or outback driving that makes the difference between having to carry jerry cans and arriving with fuel to spare.

If like Disco Muppet, myself and many other Td5 owners who actually drive the D2 regularly, it's pretty easy to clock up 20K Km a year.

Based on 11l/100km for a Td5 and 18l/100km for the V8 and a 10c per litre price differential between diesel and petrol, the Td5 would be $1726 cheaper fill up over 12 months.

If you are looking at a three year ownership you'd also want to factor in that V8 prices are not just cheaper at purchase, but resale value also declines faster than the Td5. That means you'll recoup more of your original investment on a Td5.

So basically if you want a weekend toy the V8 is a reasonable choice. If you plan to drive more than taking the D2 out on weekend outings to play on the tracks then the Td5 is the pick.

    cheers
    Paul

I get 15 l per 100k with 31s bullbar, and roof racks and mostly in and out to Brisbane from the burbs, mines a manual. With lpg I get 10l per 100k equivalent to petrol and get better again on the highway but not by a lot. My 02 has been my daily driver since new to 200,000 k. I get 800 or more out of petrol and lpg used together which is handy setting of to Stradbroke Island or fraser island etc. Mine tows a 2 tonn vagabond nicely. Test drive a few samples of both and decide. I did and in 2002 the poverty pack petrol and diesel were the same price...A month later I had a mate who did the same and he bought a new d2a manual v8...Cheers

It's always the same argument from the v8 owners. Just spend a grand or two fitting LPG or a long range tank or a roof rack so you can carry Jerry cans and you'll have as much range as a Td5...

At the time of launch the CEO of LR said that the Td5 Auto best represented the character of the Discovey. Youd have to assume that makes the V8 Manual least representative.

Mate - dont take it personally. You will notice I have put up fuel figures (that are not too shabby BTW) and keep saying "Drive them both". A lot of ownership comes down to the driving experience.

BTW if you have driven a manual V8 you would know that it not only goes like a rocket, but is much more involving than an auto (and I have an auto D1 and have driven a number of auto D2 TD5's...). As to what it represents, it represents the best traditions of rover which is a...wait for it...petrol manual... As to what the CEO says...the CEO says what he can to sell the one that cost the most to develop. The petrol was a motor tried and tested over decades in one form or another with 4 bolt mains and a BMW Bosch HEI bolted on...so very little development cost. The TD5 on the other hand cost a bomb to develop and was brand new in all respects.

To the OP...dont worry about carping on here, but drive both, taken into account fuel/diesel/lpg costs etc...then drive both again and then make your choice and be happy with the choice. If it were me...a V8 with 100,000k on the clock at the same or cheaper purchase cost makes a lot more sense than a TD5 with 200k on the clock at any point of the argument, but hey thats just my TCW.

    Cheers

I see an interesting challenge involving long range touring and some offroading coming around shortly, count me in
I agree with OffTrack in that for a daily driver Td5 is the way to go
Or, if you have deep pockets get a V8 and put up with fuel costs
My old man had a V8, it certainly had its perks, the sound of a good V8 under hard acceleration is very nice, and it's certainly smoother than the Td5.
However the Td5 sounds nice too, especially when the turbo spools up nicely
Also goes fine, I have no dramas zipping past people at 110 up steep hills
So try both, and decide what you want to do with it, pick one and don't look back
Oh and Scott, Does the V8 Man chew clutches? That was one argument my dad put forth re man vs. auto

Don't know if fuel range for long distance is a problem there is usually petrol somewere within 4-5 hundred km's were ever i go in the territory however the desert trips you will have to carry jerrycans of fuel but how ofter does this happen. What does have to be considered in high milage engines is the cost of reco'd engines, for a td5 from approx $1500 more than v8 [from turners in england].also be wary of all water crossings with the v8 tending to have more things electrical that will strand you in mid stream.

DM - mate the D2 runs a standard clutch - mines done 200k of short trips including some heavy towing. The D2 TD5 manuals run a dual mass flywheel and dont last as long according to what I have heard (I think Justinsync from Tassy on this forum mentioned the TD5's normally go before 200k but he has never done one on a V8 - the V8 clutch would be substantially cheaper also).

The auto ZF is a great box and is likely to last a long long time, and there wouldnt be much in it between its longevity and the clutch and box for a manual V8. Now replacing each box, I suspect the auto as a re-co or new box would be dearer, but I dont know.

TD5's are a nice bit of kit BTW, but V8 is my preference and the OP will just have to drive them.

    Cheers

V8 (highway travel) should get between 630 - 640 km, no problem.

Around town should get 540 - 550 km. (all with E10 in a D2a....no pinging)

This is my own experience. There are both petrol and diesel lemons out there.

    Regards
    Andrew

A chipped Td5 will run rings around a standard V8, and get heaps better economy, (both manuals) but then how would I know we only sold them....

Buy a Td5, chip it, get 800km per tank IN TOWN and don't pay to have the V8 rebuilt every time it ****s itself. And keep it for ages, seriously there is no car that can replace a D2 they're one of a kind.
