Thread: Strange goings on with auto

Just thought I would give an update for those following the thread. Did a trip to the Sunshine Coast via Marybourgh on the weekend for a wedding. Auto worked as it should until I called into some friends at Nambour on Sunday arvo on the way home. Then it did the hesitation trick as I was leaving It then did it each time I pulled up all the way home.Got the finger at lights in Gympie!!! ( The revenge was seeing same car being talked to by his friend the plain blue commodore a little further along )
So looks like it is the oil so another change . But it certainly made an improvement! The shifts were smoother and crisp, no jerkyness as before.

Well Have done 2 more changes on this(1 with filter) but it is slowly getting worse so looks like a rebuild is in order! Last change there were some fine metal on the magnet
Now the big Q is, Is there any advantage to fitting an Ashcroft TC to basically is a stock motor? It has been De EGR'ed, free flow exhaust and is running the latest ECU map according to what is scribbled on the case. Its a May '02 model EU3 car. I know there will be fors and againsts of course I do tow a little and some offroad.
Now to sit back and let the debate begin!

According to the service record oil was changed and filter at 208000, Valvoline syn,the vechile has now done 225000kms and the oil is blacker than a toymotor at 10000!!! prior to that the only other services was at 25000 and 87000. Hard to believe it would have had that much buildup.
The other finding was the filter to auto body O ring was displaced and crimped on install. So much for pro services Am going to change again in 500kms to get it cleaner.

That's a bugger about needing a rebuild Scott. My wallet feels your pain.

You'll go through BOR and whoever they recommend I'm guessing? Any quotes?

I've got a fluid change for my Auto on the cards soon. I think I have a sticky/failing solenoid that's causing the occasional rough shift. I don't want to open the proverbial can of worms and see lots of $$$ fly out if I don't need to. But the issue could be something else that's going to cost more if I don't attend to it.

I'm watching this thread with interest. I hope it's not too much of a slug to you.

Funny to see a mention of a O ring displaced and crimped between filter and valve block. I found the same on one of our D2's and around the same time I was beginning to chase after causes of occasional shuddering shifts . Never quite sure I got all the O ring . Only had myself to blame for the crushed O ring though.

I'm going through the pain at the moment. Smash repairer failed to follow the very detailed refill procedure I emailed, hand delivered and explained to them and so the one way clutch kind of exploded.

The TC is cheap by comparison to the rest and doesn't really add to the freight. Which is about 250pounds to Sydney for an auto, tc and assorted transfer rebuild stuff.

To have a quality hand built TC done here will set you back well over a grand.

Well the pain is varied. My first port of call was my usual supplier and quote was $3200! Pulled out, sent away, put back again, stock rebuild. I have to deliver the vehicle down for 2 weeks about though. 2nd quote was $1300 for a stock rebuild + about 4 hrs removal and replacement. About same time frame and from what I/we can gather the actual auto work is done by same center in Brisbane?
There is a fault code showing up now regarding a read timeout in the auto faults so I assume it is going down hill! Havent looked at a complete ashcroft aauto as I assumed it would be a bit more than a rebuild here and send the old 1 over there.

The ashcroft unit built to their "stage 2" level (for larger engines comes in at 1200pounds plus shipping (250pounds). Going through paypay today that's just less than $2500- aud. I wouldn't trust a $1300- rebuild knowing the costs of parts.

R&R should be less than $1000- (i've just had mine done for $690-)

Ahh, So 1300 would not in your opinion buy a decent rebuild? Im afraid for me autos are very much a minefield. This is my very first auto in any vehicle, Always been a stirrer!
If I really want to R&R is well within my own ability's . So how do you go with the exchange return for Ashcrofts?

For the cost of freight vs the core charge it's not worth it. The prices I've quoted are the base charge without exchange.

I had not thought of the freight verse cost of core exchange! I just assumed that it was dearer! But now I have looked it does come out nearly the same! A most viable option. So is that what you fitted up? An Ashcroft? Did you do a change of the cooler and lines or were they just flushed? I can see it would be easy enough to do the hose lines but would the cooler be able to be cleaned properly? Even if removed?
I can see that a lot of gunk would settle in a cooler, just like an engine radiator.
