Many thanks for all the replies, i'm now in two minds about the 850CCA or 1000CCA esp if they are the same price
... something to ponder about!
@ Offtrack, that's a very good point you mention about the manufacturing codes/dates etc... I will be asking RACV about that when I go ahead.
Out of curiosity, is there any black magic to deciphering the manufacturing codes to translate into a date of manufacture, or are batteries simply stamped with a manufacturing date? Obviously I don't want to be purchasing a battery if it has sat on a shelf or in the back of a truck for a number of years if it has an effect on life expectancy in the end?...
Thanks again all, much appreciated.
Cheers,
Lp

Go with the 1000CCA 'cos you'll have more reserve capacity for those hard starts on frosty mornings
. My battery died in August 2012 and it was a RACV / RACQ etc jobby of unknown age (it came with the LR and i'd already had it for more than 2 years) and it was a 1000CCA
however although way over spec i replaced it with one of the same capacity - a different brand though but for no other reason than it was a convenient purchase. It is a CATERPILLAR P/N 115-2422 which is 1000CCA. It's a premium jobbie with Calcium Grid and under $250 with 1 year replacement warranty followed by 6 years ProRata. Available through your local CATERPILLAR dealer.

Thanks for the reply there :-D ...
Well, I have had the battery on charge for close to the last 48 hours and today before she got the royal treatment proceeded to start it.... it barely started but cranked over, this happened 1st start to move it further up the carport and again before taking it for a drive after the royal treatment (3 hrs later!!)....
Is 48 hours enough to be charging the 600CCA battery I have or is it something more sinister like the alternator/starter motor perhaps on its way out?
(battery charger isn't an issue as it charges my husbands FJ40, which has a worked chev 400 Small block which needs a huge crank just to turn the damn thing over!)
Dare I ask, but is there an easy way to differentiate a problem between the battery or starter motor at all?
Any thoughts...
Thanks,
Lp

Pull the battery from the fj40 and chuck it in lp and see if it starts easier. If using a known good battery is still difficult to start, probably not the battery .
If swapping them over is troublesome, I'd hook some jump leads between the two, so it's got some extra power available, same story, if it's the battery it should kick over easier.
To me it sounds more like a failing battery. Even if it is the starter motor or something else, the battery may soon be toast anyway due to a period of so much extra being asked of it.

Thx Seano87 for the reply,
I asked hubby if he wanted to take his battery out xmas eve... too much faffing around for him
and then I thought better of it... not being sure what would happen to anything computerised!!
I've got it on charge again for another 24 hrs and will see how that goes. It seemed to have started with a little more oomph after I took it for a drive once it was washed ... and it started better again driving it under the carport for the night.
My short trips consist of between 20 and 25k's x 5 days a week and 1/2 of that again on the weekends (even less during holidays!) so probably just isn't getting enough charge when the AC/fan has been running on those stinking hot days?
Starter motors seem to be around the same price as a battery, i'd rather do one than have to do both so fingers crossed it's the battery :-D
Cheers,
Lp

Those short trips will not be helping if the battery is that age. As batteries get older they lose the ability to hold charge. which is what is happening to yours. Depending on the size of your battery charger 48 hrs would be more than enough to bring it back up, At 5 yrs old I would be replacing it because there is nothing more frustrating than a dead battery! Cannot even listen to the stereo waiting for the repair man!
while it is parked for any length of time put a trickle charger on it to keep the bat topped up. Normal batteries do not like to go flat unlike deepcycles which actually have cycle flat occasionally or they sulphate up.

Another vote for the CAT battery here. I picked one up a few months back and all my electrical issues seemed to have ceased for the moment.
Now all I need to sort our is the Key barrel.

Thanks all for the replies...
What a morning....
Booked in the RACV to purchase the 1000CCA battery this morning. Gentleman rocked up (same man that had helped me the previous week too LOL).... told him what I needed and was told that he didn't have that in his truck! I queried him further as to 'why not' when it was booked in?. I was told that RACV don't handle the battery side of things and that it is separately run - Annoying!! So no battery from RACV!! (He did have the 850 in stock, apparently the 1000CCA is a special order, now why didn't they tell me this when I called on Monday to ask what their process was *grumble*)
Next on the list was the number provided by Yorkie (thanks). William Adams in Clayton are the actual company for that phone number. I called them and their message stated in short "switchboard closed".... obviously closed over Xmas, not really what I wanted to hear...
I contacted Caterpillar directly in Tullamarine 03 9953 9333, explained to them my situation and the message received from William Adams Clayton. I was then provided with Lavertons telephone 03 99319666 and received the same message as Claytons answering machine. So no battery from William Adams/Caterpillar!
I then contacted Marshall Batteries.... explained to him what I had and what I needed... he said 'oh no you better not put that in, it will blow out all manner of things' ..pfffft - really !! *roll eyes* ... their highest capacity battery was a 600CCA. I mentioned to him what some of yourselves had done capacity wise and he was none the wiser - WT??
So I have now contacted Battery World, they have a 950CCA in stock for the same price as the RACV branded one but only 12 months warranty...
Out of curiosity, has anyone had experience/knowledge with the LION battery range? (I've not heard of them personally)
Edit - Oh well, gave Lion a call and they only have 870 in stock!
After all the running around this morning, looks like the only one available to me in the closest capacity is that from Battery World.
--------------
Question:
--------------
Given that my husband will be removing the battery.
1. Is there anything he should be cognisant of when disconnecting, removing the old battery and fitting, connecting the new battery, other than earthing?
Thanks again for all the help, much appreciated :-D
Cheers,
Lp
