    Conundrum...which D2?

    Hi All,

Long time reader and hopefully going to be first time Discovery owner, very soon. I have been trawling through the search function a bit and there isn't an answer to this one and unfortunately I think it may come down to my own preference anyway.

But having said that I was hopeful of getting a few opinions from the wise Disco owners of christmas past on the conundrum I'm faced with. I have about $14k to spend and have been looking at both 2001/2 TD5 autos with Kms from 195-270kms on the odo, all with FSR at LR specialist and also looking at 2002/2003 (update) V8 Autos with about 130-160'kms on the odo.

Obviously very different drivers, but I'm not at this stage looking to do a mega trips i.e. cape york or any thing, but use it for weekend camping trips etc. So fuel econ isn't the concern. The finance minister is mainly concerned with getting something that will cost a bomb to fix if it does go wrong.

So having said that am I best to look at a lower km V8 or the best quality TD5? Or just the best i can find - FSR, extra preventative work done, buy only from a landy nutter? Any views would be great. I know its probably going to come down to the best i can get for my $ but any extra input would be great.

    thanks Tom

14k sounds like a reasonable budget. Not sure you will have any spare change though. For me, if I was to sell my rig I would be asking for more than 14 (D2a with 140k) but I know my rig is in very good condition and I'm not looking to sell. It's also just a weekender atm.

Be prepared to fix it yourself and buy parts from overseas. Both very easy to do. Otherwise be cashed up, it's European after all.

If you're just wanting it for weekend trips and fuel economy isn't an issue, I'd be inclined to go for a V8.
Shock horror as a Td5 driver I know
Only real issue with the 02 model is they don't have the CDL internals.
For what you want to spend, you'll probably get more for your money in a good V8 than an average Td5
    But.
Take them both for a test drive, and pick which one you like more
The Phantom - Oslo Blue 2001 Td5 SE.
Half dead but will live again!

    Nina - Chawton White 2003 Td5 S

Onepeg14. Before buying mine a few yrs ago a bit of research revealed there are quite a few options as standard that you might like to consider. I put together a snapshot of what model has what, unfortunately I didnt go beyond 2001 and only looked at V8's. But it might help.

Ignore the "Trade-In" and "$Now" columns, there were only relevant at Nov 2008.

I have owned both an 04 V8 and now an 04 TD5. I would say my preference would be the TD5. The fuel economy on the V8 was lousy at best and once I hooked the van(apprx 1.5T) up it was atrocious. We took it to the cape in 2010 and while it performed its task well and handled the van no problems off road there were times up there when I was down to 3klm to the litre.
Also the V8 lacks torque when towing.

I have found the economy on the TD5 to be outstanding. Highway work I am getting around 10Klm/Litre with Steel Bar full rook basket and draws in the rear. It also tows my new Camper very well which weighs in at around 1.8t.
The TD5 is a bit slower off the mark but once she is rolling the performance is quite good. I do miss the sound of the V8 but.

I was in the same boat months ago. I found a 2000 v8 with just 79k on the clock. used for the school run in Sydney. Full LR service history. all the toys, in great condition. I paid 14k, yes top money for the car but its like new. TD5's for the same money were good but a little too used for my liking.

i only have mine as a weekender and driven carefully as i do and using 98 ron petrol i gte 550 - 600 k urban from it. Only 30 bucks more that my wifes x-trail around town.

if i was doing massive journies and towing then yes a TD5 for encomony.

about 90kph on the freeway it's whisper quiet and does not break the bank. good luck

Mate - consider a V8 that has been fitted with sequential LPG injection - or budget to fit it. I run my V8 - manual with 31's, TJM winch bar, Rhino roof rack, tanks etc on SGI and get the equivalent of about 9l/100k if it were petrol running and petrol cost...this will improve the more I drive it on gas it the computer learns. SGI also increases low down torque and mine pulls my 2 tonn boat very nicely. You also get increased range having both 90l of petrol and lpg as well. THe knockers will talk about lack of LPG out west - if that is a factor for you then fine, but otherwise the system is excellent - best of both worlds - V8 grunt, smoothness and sound and TD5 fuel economy.

    Cheers

Landies are from England, Britain at a stretch Europes the place that gets cut off when there's fog in the channel. Fair comment though.
