Sounds like a Harmonic balancer failure. Not uncommon.
Generally you need to replace them I am afraid and they are pretty expensive

Hi All,
My 2000 D2 TD5 has developed another issue. Don't you love em! Mind you it has done 235K and never had any engine issues. Gone thru the usual oil in injector harness (twice), replacing shuttle valve switches in ABS modulator for 3 Amigos fix plus two wheel sensors, leaking seal on side of transfer case, fuel pressure regulator (twice), and fuel pump in tank.
Latest problem is strange. At idle there is a loud rattle (sounds like worn tappets)that stops when aircon turned off. There is also another sound like grating metal that comes from front of car when taking off under power or on a hill.
I've done the usual 'tubing to ear' test with engine running listening to aircon compressor, idler pulley & alternator.
These are OK, but when I pulled plastic cover off under radiator & listened to crankshaft pulley I was nearly deafened.
Has anyone had problem with this pulley & can they be repaired?
Cheers..B

yes - same unit
Does anyone know of a company that can rebuild the TD5 harmonic balance pulley, or supply cheaper equivalent?
LR want approx. $1500 plus fitting, and after market units in UK approx. BP300 plus postage.
These prices are crazy for a unit which is basically a steel pulley with synthetic shock absorbing inner.

have you tried MR automotive?

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
No not yet,
Do you think they would be less expensive than Tunstall Motors in Cleveland?
These guys specialise in all British vehicles & my Disco TD5 has been serviced by them after warranty issues were resolved by LR
I know owning a Landy can be Very expensive, so have done the mandatory repair/upgrade of Wabco ABS modulator to finally lay the 3 amigos to rest (that was 4 yrs ago).
Tunstall Motors have quoted $1100 inc install.(approx. 2 hrs labour)
Anyone out there had a cheaper repair (that is still functioning after 6 months) Please leave details or PM
$1100 incl fitting is a good price. I'd NOT be trying to repair this component.

REPLACE IT NOW!!!!!
My harmonic balancer ended up chewing out the end of the crankshaft and I ended up needing to replace the crankshaft! A bloody sight more than $1100-$1500 I can assure you...... try about $10,500!
Now that is not to say that the engine really needed rebuilding, but if you're going to remove the crank, you have to do bottom end bearings.... and you might as well do the rings and so on.
This is a part known to go and yes it is a pricey part, you just have to grit your teeth and do it before you have a stuffed crankshaft.
