    G'day XHP,

My Disco has 284k on the clock!!i

Thanks for the info I was thinking of doing the same, if you do drop them off is it just a matter of re-fitting them if they are OK, or just replce them anyway?

    Cheers

If I was you I would take off one of the Conrod caps and see if the bottom end baring is dry or has a nice oily film, which u hope it is...

Mine was oily but I still changed it, after changing it my oil pressure was higher....

How many km's do u have on ur disco?

The only way to be sure us to check all main and big end bearings. Checking one only in a situation like this isn't going to tell you much.
I would also be lifting the rocker cover and inspecting the cam lobes.
If you believe it sounded/ felt different then it has likely damaged a bearing or more.

    Cheers

Time to buy a lotto Ticket!!

I fitted the new bolt, refiited everything as per instaructions with new sump gasket, new filters and oil........... brought up oil prsure with starter motor, and start............... NO UNUSUAL NOISES !! Test Drive OK!!!!

Presuming nothing rears its ugly head I think I had a win!!!!

Word of waring for anyone within the problem area!!, Buy a $2 bolt and spend 2 -4 hours making sure your is OK !

Cheers and thanks for your asistance.

Oil lights generally operate in the 6-8 psi range. We always say once you see the light the engine is stuffed! Because by the time the light is on the pressure is waaaaay down and going further. It also depends on the quality of the oil, what you are doing at the time, eg full noise up that hill with the 4t race car on the back or idling in the shed. Either way if you drive with the light on bearings will be scored and the list goes on after that.

I get the impression from several previous posts that the damage is almost instantaneous if under load. Although I wonder if someone has a nip up , then sees the light.
This is balanced by my previous experience in seeing a Commodore treated with Nulon drive from singapore to KL with no oil.

However I guess that diesels have greater forces involved than petrol engines.
At the very least I would do an oil pressure check with gauge against the spec.

At idle, less than 20 seconds.
At hway speed, less than 5 seconds possibly immediately

I can get pic of my td5 crank after something less of a minute at idle. Number 2&3 con rod journals had been completely destroyed, thrust washers and 2 mains.
