Disco II TD5 steering pump query

I have had the drive belt noisy and thought it was air con load.Replaced belt and cleaned pulleys. Still there. Noticed that there was rubber and discolouration on PS Pump pulley. When I turn the pump by hand there is quite a load on it.
    Is this normal?
Can't find any reference to this issue in the forum.
    Any suggestions please.

Could possibly be the exhaust manifold warped and leaking - it makes a sound just like a slipping accessory drive belt. Check for broken exhaust studs and missing nuts and black exhaust stain. No 5 cylinder exhaust port is usually the first to leak.

I don't know normal resistance in the disco pump, or how to express in testing terms, but discoloration may indicate an issue. Power steering pumps usually turn with only little resistance.

    Steering pump cont

Have just been out and checked exhaust manifold and all looks good thereThe steering pump pulley definitely looks as if it has been really hot and there is rubber left behind from the back of the belt.
I think it is time for a new pump.
Has anyone any ideas on a good place to buy one?

Thanks for the help so far

Have found out the problem. It is definitely the steering pump. Now that I have put it all back together the pump is screaming.
Have picked up a new pump and that spins freely.
    All going again

    Thanks to all

    Hi devo,
I just wanted to say thanks for your post, I believe I am having the exact same problem! The pump pulley does not spin freely like the other pulleys, it has a bit of play where you can rock it from side to side but it doesn't spin freely (if that makes sense).

I will arrange a new PAS pump and report back

the turning resistance of a connected power steer pump is such that it will not spin freely but require turning by hand. the feeling as you turn should be firm, not tight, constant, not notchy, and with minimal slop to it. there should be no grating feeling like a rough bearing. hope this helps.
    Cheers Scott
