Locked out - car dormant for 2 weeks

Unbelievable. Locked out of my own vehicle. If I ever find the bonehead who thought this .... .. nevermind.

My Disco 2 seems to have put itself into hibernation. I vaguely recall reading that it will do so after being left for a certain period of time, but can't recall where.

Hadn't started it for 2 weeks, but did have the doors open and charged (topped up) the battery just a week ago. Battery is know to be good.

But....tested voltage between starter solenoid positive terminal and the chassis and got nothing, which is odd. Of course my jumper leads are locked in the truck so until a mate arrives with another set I can't run power to the battery circuit via the starter.

Long weekend, didn't have the EKA code and wasn't able to obtain it from the LR dealer until this morning, so after some googling I tried a code (1515) that had been reported to work by (I think) American and UK owners. No luck there but it seems that may have turned the alarm off. Before I entered that code the alarm dash light was flashing, now it's out. Also noted that contrary to the owners manual, no audible chirps were heard from the alarm during this procedure.

This morning I got the code from LR but again no success.

Question: can anyone confirm that when key is turned to the unlock position (clockwise) that it only turns to about 1 or 2 o'clock, not 3 o'oclock?

Hopefully by this arvo I'll get hold of some jumper leads and get 12V to the battery via the starter, but if that doesn't power up the door locks I think next step it to disconnect the battery in hope of resetting the alarm.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to open the bonnet from outside the vehicle or other ideas on how to get into my (^@#(^&(^@ vehicle?

    Arrrrgghh...

Update: battery now known to be dead. How a battery goes from strong to dead in 1 week I don't know.

Hooked 12v to starter terminal, earthed to inside of crossmember, alarm dash light flickered, put the EKA code in, dash light flicker tempo changed to fast, pressed the key fob a few times and heard the central locking trying to work, took a few goes for it to open (note - key did not open door).

Popped bonnet, only getting 4V across the battery. Put in spare battery and she fired up.

Note to self: try to have long battery cable, 13m spanner and set of vice grips to clamp to chassis in accompanying vehicle in case of battery failure!

There is a known battery drain issue on the D2's - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ery-drain.html

    Hey, thanks for that.

I thought the space invaders sounds stopped on mine when accessories or reds are off. Looks like I have some testing to do this weekend.

Have also noted an intermittent clicking sound when it's quiet out in the bush. Only does it every so often and I can't figure out any correlating circumstances. Having noted the ABS space invaders previously my first thoughts were either that or my LPG system doing something odd.

Electrickery will do this... A battery will drop a cell, or just decide enough is enough, without warning and on its own terms. There is absolutely no defence. I've had this occurrence on cars other than a Landy, so rest assured its not a genetic or isolated thing.
You would think, however, that a mechanical key will open a mechanical lock to at least allow access.
The code should only shut the horn down to stop waking the neighbours.

Have you got ACE on the disco ? I have a similar problem after installing coils in the back with a 2 inch lift. The ACE relay keeps clicking every 20 or 30 seconds even when the car is "turned off". I am trying to find a solution the problem but in the meantime, am driving without the ACE relay to avoid having to open the bonnet and removing the relay every night. My battery drains in less than 48 hours if I leave the car locked with the relay in.

Its the small yellow relay in the under-bonnet fuse box. R14. Last Relay towards the firewall, right hand side when looking from the front with bonnet open.

When my battery flattened, I was able to manually unlock the door with the key, alarm didn't sound until I connected the charger

    Update:

Measured battery draw to be about 0.15 to 0.2 amps, which I think should be fine.

No space invaders for me with ignition off.

Truck is non ACE and non SLS.

Only things left to check I guess are alternator charge and battery draw with alarm on, .... which will be ...... er . .. challenging.

IIRC my D2's lock needed a lot of exercising to get the key to turn enough to unlock after not having been used previously.
