I fitted 245/75-16 MT's to my TD5 and while a shade more sluggish in traffic conditions they are much nicer off road than the standard 235/70-16 AT's.
Good luck with whatever you choose
I like these tyres, and have seen the good reviews. So thought it was an easy choice.
But after coming here and checking up on aulro tyre size guide, I figure 245x75x16s are the correct size for my stock D2TD5. But I have also read that some others say that 265x75x16s with standard lift do not rub either. I have also found the Hankook Dynapro MTs do a 235x85x16 tyre as well.
So which is best? Should I go a thinner tyre with a higher wall (for a little lift) such as the 235x85? Or should I go wider such as the 265x75 for more road traction? Or should I play safe and use the aulro size criteria and go 245x75s?
Never thought choosing tyres would be a question I needed to get advise on. But best to ask I reckon.

I've fitted 245/75 km2s to mine and I think they are great on and off road.... I went with this size as it was legal in Vic and it didn't change the gearing too much, I think a bigger tyre would require changes to the gearing for a manual (not so much of an issue for an auto) but if you we're happy to do this then the extra diff hight from a larger tyre would be great off road....
If you've chipped or remapped your TD5 then the changed gearing from a taller tyre won't be such of an issue, otherwise you'll find the gearing will be too tall without changing the diff ratios & acceleration on-road will be sluggish.
I have 245/75's on mine, & even with a 2" lift I reckon they fill out the wheel arches nicely, and the extra diff clearance is noticeable, as is the higher gearing, but I'm a pretty relaxed driver so I'm not too concerned. I chose not to go to taller tyres as I was worried I might find the acceleration too slow if I did.
Some info on my gearing with 245/75 Maxxis Bighorns: 235/70 tyres 110km/h on gps reads 115 on speedo, 245/75 tyres 110kmh on gps reads 105 on speedo
Thanks Mr.Bear, I didn't think that extra 5 would make the car bog down with take off. I guess we live and learn.
Thanks Farva, Ive got no idea what sizes are legal here in QLD. Its pretty relaxed though, as ive heard you guys need a safety certificate every year, and as long as a car is registered here, you can go 20 plus years without a check up. But i'm tending to steer away from the 85's at the moment until I can get a bit more info. I still like the fact if the 235x85s work I can deflate them wider in the sand. But don't like the thought of a lagging take off. I was priced on the 245 tyres at $220 each fitted and balanced which seems like a really good deal. It's also an auto.
Thanks Alex110, food for thought there matey. I was going to get it chipped next service which is a $700 that MR Autos said they prefer to use (i cant remember the brand though). As the service is still not due for quite a few months, do you think I should buy the tyres 1st or like you said, get it chipped first? I have Maxxis 235x70x16s Bravos on it now and it sits on the gps at the same as the speedo, as far as ive noticed anyway.
Ive also heard or read somewhere that the 245x75 are a higher wall than the 235x75s? This dosnt make sense to me, could be a typo? But if this is true, then the 245x75s should be, I guess close to the same wall height as the 235x85s. Sort of cancelling the height out and getting a wider tyre at the same time. I'm lost.
I suppose I can also ask the tyre guys of their opinion, but I hate hassling someone unless I am ready to give them the job straight away. Plus all you aulro guys have already been there and done that with the same vehicle.
Cheers,
Manufactures dont always follow the standard.
The series was meant to be the percentage of width in wall height. IE 100/75-16 would be 100mm wide and 75mm tyre wall height.
In theory 245/75 equals 245mm wide with a wall height of 75% 0f 245mm = 183.75mm.
Therefore if the width is 10mm narrower then the wall height will drop by 7.5mm
Happy Days.
a quick google.
Series is actually known as Aspect ratio. It's the ratio of tread width to section height. Section height is distance between beed and tread.
Happy Days.
Thanks joel0407,
That makes perfect sense now.
The 245x75s seem like the better option. If all i'm losing is 2.5mm of height from the 235x85s, then the extra 10mm width will be a bonus on the 245s.
Thanks again!
Sorry joel0407, ive had a real long day.
I'll have a proper look at it tomorrow.
The way I worked it out was that the 7.5mm off, was because the 235x85s were taller than the 245x75s leaving the remainder of 2.5mm. But I am mathematically challenged at the best of times. I'll try to make more sense of it tomorrow when my brain is fresher.
Thanks again!
