D2 non cdl to cdl help / clear up

Gday I've been googling for a while now and find my self going around in circles.

I don't the cdl internals. I want to get my late 01 d2 auto td5 to have cdl.

    1. Do I need to replace the whole transfer case or just the front end?
    Which is easier?/ better.

My d 2 has never done a lot of hard work in its life so would rather keep most of my transfer case if I can.

    2. How hard is the install? I'm hoping to do it with a good mate over a few days in his shed.

    3. I see some people grab an old d1 trans case and mod it? Why? Would a later model 2d if easier ? / better?

    4. I'd love to find a DIY guide on it if anyone knows of one.

    5. Any advice / recommendations on what comb or parts to get to make the install easier/ better job.

    6. Thank you for reading.

once you get the TC out its fairly easy if you have some mechanical nous
    3. I see some people grab an old d1 trans case and mod it? Why? Would a later model 2d if easier ? / better?
    AFAIK D1 & D2 TC's are the same
    4. I'd love to find a DIY guide on it if anyone knows of one.
Try the good oil or the tutorials section

Before you start pulling things apart, check and verify that you haven't already got all the CDL mechanism in your box already and are just lacking the remote engagement mechanism/levers/cable. I have a 2001 D2 and the CDL mechanism is present.

I'm not sure when LR stopped fitting the CDL guts but I thought it was early 2002 - and reintroduced with the D2a sometime in 2003. Others should be able to verify this and may even be aware of a VIN number when it was omitted.

If fitted you should be able to feel a 10mm bolt on top of the front output housing. If present, turning this bolt 90 deg (not sure which way) should engage your CDL.

    Also check this thread:

It's not complete, but might help.

The number is on the TC and it should tell you if you've got it, check the last post for more info. CDL was officially removed mid 01 i.e start of the 02MY.

The reason I'm almost 100 percent sure I have no cdl is I've checked my vin number with others on another thread. My build date is October 01 but made it aus in 02 and is registered at an 02 model.

I'll find my trans number tomorrow after work to double check. Thank you everyone so far for your help.

Does it mater which front end housing i swap it with? Eg one from an 2000 or a 04 model? Are they all they same? Or did landrover change the auto box and / or trans case

You should have the internals. The change over build date was narrowed down to a six week period in april/may 2001. The compliance date and registration dates are irrelevant to changes in spec - only the VIN/Build Date matter.

Only the transfer case was changed - the auto is untouched.
