I appear to have small amounts of diesel in my cooling system expansion tank on a daily basis as well as showing a persistent low temperature on the gauge, is this a fuel cooler problem and is the low temperature a separate or related issue?

Welcome to AULRO
As your in the Discovery 2 area I'll assume it's a TD5 motor.
The fuel cooler as far as I know is the only place the coolant and diesel are close to each other.
There is an small chance it could be a crack in the head or a head gasket.
Others may know more about how to test for this.
I would think the low temperature reading would not be related.
One other thing to check is your engine oil level.
If the injector O rings are leaking fuel will enter the crankcase and the oil level raises.
I don't believe if the above O rings are leaking diesel gets in to the cooling system.

Thanks, Yes it is a TD5 the engine still runs well so hopefully not a head problem. I'll replace the thermostat first and sort that problem followed by a new cooler. In looking through all the posts I've not come across anyone else with this problem am I a first?

Are you sure it's diesel and not engine oil?
Not that the two should be easy to confuse LOL

I'm Pretty sure it's diesel by it's smell, but I will have a good look when I change the thermostat just in case it's not as the cooler is not cheep.

If it was engine oil the coolant bottle would be black inside, this happened to mine.
