Oil volume TD5 -is the owners manual wrong?

Have changed oil today along with both filters on my new/old 2002 Disco.

While the sump plug and spinner filter are relatively easy what cursed son of a dog designed the placement of the oil filter?
I guess mine is even worse seeing I have an ARB battery tray but anyway its the worst access I have EVER seen on any car.
    However the question is.
I have now poured 7 litres of Penrite Diesel 5 into the sump seeing that the Owners manual says the oil change capacity including filters is 7.2 litres, but the oil level after 15 or so minutes is just over "add".

Is there a problem with dipsticks on TD5s as I am pretty sure that about 8 litres came out with it reading "full" on the dipstick.

Should I maybe only fill it to say midway between "add" and "full"?
I probably will anyway as it cannot hurt.

Another question. When I tried to pour the Penrite from the cunning little tap which comes under the lid of the 10 litre pack , nothing came as was a moulded plug which was part of the actual pack under the thread for the tap which I had to pierce with a screwdriver, and then the flow was crap. Is this normal on those 10 litre bottles or was mine a rogue that got through unfinished. I have never come across the problem before AFAIR.
If so how do you get rid of the whole plug without levering on the thread and ruining it . I would hate to drill it out as you would end up with plastic in the oil. It makes me never to want to buy one of them again. What a pain but I did get a lovely oil bath

So many questions, so little time........................... The last bit on the dipstick seems to come up quickly with a min. of oil added. I add until its on the end of the stick then I run the motor and fill the filters, then add the rest in 500ml increments. the difference between add and full appears to be a spinon filter full, more or less.
Most engines are quite happy with the oil 'tween full and add, never has to be spoton, just avoid below add! The penrite drums always have the tap outlet blanked, as do most 20l drums, oil or chemical. I just use a 3/4" twist drill to open it and all the plastic spirals out on the drill flutes. Hint, lay the drum on its back to perform afore said operation!
    Cheers Scott

I got 9 litres out of mine the other day in Coober Pedy. I had only put a bit over 7 in and never topped up....

That's why she's in the shop now.

I was a bit confused when I did mine, but I followed UPs guide.
I drained it, let it dribble out while I did the filters and yes, I think lots of Td5 owners have a bone to pick with LR about that filter location.
I put about 6.5-7L in then fired it up so that the filters would fill up, etc then switched it off and checked. Quite low on the dipstick. Then I put the remaining lire or so in which brought it up to near perfect. Hasn't moved since.

Yes I waited another 30 minutes and found that the level came up to about 1/3. I then added another around 300CC and last time I looked it was at 3/4 so all cool.
TD5s seem to take forever to drain back.

Agreed - almost. Bugger of job especially with an ARB tray. However, worst design - don't think so. My brother had a 59 Fiat many years ago. You had to remove the radiator to change the oil filter. Also, friend had a Jag a similarly long time ago. Oil fliter was at back of engine close to fire wall. He got a recall to fit a 90deg elbow so you didn't have to remove the engine to change the filter. He wasn't impressed as his car by that stage was 18months old and he was certain the dealer didn't remove the engine when doing the servicing.

    oil change

Funny , my REVS tells me 7.5 lts.
Fit the filters & I fill mine from a 20 lt drum and use a one litre jug which pours well and I never spill a drop. 'Then I start it up and run it a bit to check for leaks. I then dip the oil and that is it till next change. Spot on.
